Question One: What are the strengths of each mechanic? How do these mechanics benefit a good open-world exploration game?
-
A health system would benefit the game because if the map has long/hard parts the player will have multiple chances to clear the part without dying and getting frustrated.
-
A stamina system would benefit the game because it makes the player think more about the game by introducing more aspects to the game than just running and jumping over obstacles. The player now has to account for their stamina and manage it, which brings a whole new aspect into playing the game.
-
A map would benefit the game because it would show what there is to explore and find, allowing the player to be curious and explore new areas and places.
Question Two: What are the weaknesses of each mechanic? How do these mechanics take away from the experience of the game?
-
A health system might take away from the experience of the game because it can cause the player to get into spots that they shouldn't be by running through the obstacles and taking some damage. Also, the player can just skip hard jumps or obstacles that you can die to by running through it.
-
A stamina system would take away from the experience of the game because it restricts the player to a point, and constantly waiting for the stamina to replenish would be annoying and repetitive.
-
A map system would take away from the experience of the game because it may overwhelm the player because they realize how much they have to explore. If the map is empty at first, then the player may feel overwhelmed by the size of the map and how much there is to find.
Question Three: What would you personally change about each mechanic? If there was a notable weakness, how would you fix it? If there was a notable strength, how would you enhance it?
