At first I tried some complex thing involving multiple counters, a timer and some division but then I realised that all you need to do is to increase the counter when the play clicks and then after a second decrease the counter again!

You can just not click for 8 seconds and it will just slowly decrease the number even though you aren't clicking

It measures clicks per second, not total clicks minus 1 each second
Since you can very easily just click faster to increase the number more
I suck at explaining this, so sorry if it's confusing.
