What inspired you to become a voice actor?

#

I was an actor on stage and in tv commercials for two decades before becoming a voice actor. I loved Space Battleship Yamato, Voltron, Robotech when I was a kid and later Toonami. I got a chance to audition for a director at Funimation, so I took it and never looked back since!

What is your favourite part about voice acting?

#

I love that I can spend an hour in the booth using my talents and my craft and it goes out to millions of audience members around the whole damn world! Compared to doing a play, which I will still always love the intimacy of, the reach is enormous.

Would you say you act similar to Aizawa, or are you complete opposites?

#

Definitely some similarities! I'm often a man of few words in my social interactions, I'm more of an introvert with a tight-knit group of few trusted friends rather than extrovert with hundreds of friends. I'm typically the quiet guy at the party, if I'm there at all

What shows are you into that aren’t anime?

The Mandolorian has my entire attention

#

I took 3 yrs of Spanish in HS and another 2 semesters in college, but I don't practice much so now I just end up looking deep into my camera while streaming and saying random Spanish words in my best seductive sensi voice, "Sacapuntas" is my favorite because it sounds so sensual but the definition of the word is uh, not.

What’s your favourite pass time hobby?

#

Ever since the pandemic and lockdown of 2020 I took up Twitch streaming 3 nights a week (Mon, Wed, Sat) and LOVE IT. Spending time and interacting with my community has become so important to me. It's been 9 months and I can't get enough! I hope to maybe meet some of you in my stream of Among Us tonight, 7pm pst - 9pm cst - 8pm est https://twitch.tv/realchriswehkamp

what inspired you to start voice acting and how did you start out?

#

I grew up infatuated with acting, video games, movies, tv shows and animation. I used to practice my best version of Kevin Conroy's performance as Batman in Batman The Animated Series in the 90's. I knew I wanted to be an actor or a filmmaker or a writer or a video game designer or all of them. I acted all through school and majored in media arts in college. I watched Cowboy Bebop on Toonami back in the early 00's and Steve Blum's performance as Spike Spiegel riveted me to the screen. I felt like I was seeing a glimpse at how compelling and powerful anime dub acting could be for the first time and I put it in the back of my head to pursue. When I got a chance to audition for Funi I jumped at it, that was back in 2011.

How have you been handling the pandemic?

#

A day at a time tbh. I have a wife and 3 kids under the age of 11 so it's been unquestionably the hardest time of our lives! But I know I'm not alone in that and I also know I've been VERY fortunate to be able to keep doing the work I love remotely from home this whole time.

What practises do you do before recording scenes?

#

I like to sing! For characters that I know will be major recurring roles I typically assign songs / albums that seem to resonate with them in some way and listen to / sing along with those songs. For Aizawa, it was Bulls On Parade by Rage Against the Machine

#

Do you enjoy the fan art, fan fictions and merch people have made for your character?

#

I'm constantly blown away by the INCREDIBLE talent in the cosplay, fanart, fanfic, maker / creator / remixer community around MHA and other fandoms I voice characters in. I miss seeing your work in person at conventions! Hpefully 2021 we can all get back to that again when it's safe to do so!

What do you love about what you do? What don't you like?

#

This past year my fav thing about voice acting and voiceover is that I can do it from my home studio! What I don't like is how I don't get to meet my fellow castmates often, even back in normal times. We mostly perform in isolation in booth and sometimes I do miss the energy of a live group performance (which is why Twitch streams and live panels at cons are SO GREAT)

#

I love coffee, but I switched almost exclusively to tea about 15 years ago due to the negative effects coffee was having on my vocals. I drink about 3 cups of black tea per day

It's very hard to choose just one. From the most recent season, Aizawa's talk with Deku when he dubs him the 'problem child' really had me choked up in the booth.

What type of job you did before you became a voice actor?

#

I worked in IT and went fulltime voice acting and commercial voiceover in 2019. Before that I've had tons of jobs, telemarketer, waiter at Red Lobster, land surveyor, entertainment writer for local newspaper, but my favorite was pizza delivery driver. Just vibing to music and doing voices in my car

Breath control is essential for voice acting and voiceover work, and meditation is excellent practice for breath control, which also happens to be ideal for me to calm down

What would you say to people that are interested in starting to voice act?

#

Voice acting is just acting. Start on stage if you can and if you can't start by taking some classes with respected pros, lots available remotely during this pandemic. Record your voice every day and listen back, stretch your range, sing a lot, read a lot of fiction to develop your imagination.

My first audition for an anime was 2011, for a show called Blood C. I didn't book that, but got some bits in a show called Baka and Test in 2012, then my first named role in a show called Level E. My first lead role was Tenka Kumo in Laughing Under the Clouds in 2013

Are you a cat person like Aizawa irl?

#

I'm an animal person, all animals. I love them all. I've had cats and dogs throughout my life, but I love horses, hamsters, snakes, I love nature and animals

Is there any Aizawa line that made you laugh when you first tried to say it?

#

Ok so we got to record the lines of our characters in MHA One's Justice 2 video game. One of the lines had a typo where Aizawa was talking about 'winning at all costs, to show he is better than his father' or something.

I recorded it but the director and I were like "this is DEFINITELY supposed to be a Todoroki line"

#

So a week or so went by and sure enough called back in for pickups because it was mislabeled by the licensor. I was excited for a brief time to learn about Aizawa's father and we had fun recording that one

Do you act kind of like Aizawa in real life?

#

I've been told by people who later became friends that I can seem kind of standoffish at first in person. I take time to warm p to people. In a crowd of 4 or more people I mostly clam up. I really love interacting with people one or two at a time

TOTALLY not the case at cons, on stage or in my streams though. Those are essentially performances and I get to perform, which I love

Can you remember a mistake/blooper that made everyone burst into laughter?

During the fight between Aizawa and Toga in MHA s4 I delivered a very serious line in very high-pitched voice that nobody was expecting and the director, engineer and I died laughing

I was a serious problem child when I was a kid, I went o principals office first week of Kindergarten, my parents were called every year by angry teachers like clockwork. I had a few teachers that were able to harness my chaos. One was a 7th grade humanities teacher who gave me the assignment to take the book Hank the Cowdog home and read the entire thing chapter by chapter into a tape recorder, then bring it back to class to play for the class a chapter at a time each day for about a month. I respected her so much and I was so quiet in her class going forward

My kids are amazing at making sure I never get a big ego. They were bored to death with MHA, "too much talking." They watched one episode of the show I have a lead role i this season, Gymnastic Samurai, and were like "yeah it's ok."

Video game voice acting in a game like OJ2 needs to grab focus quickly, because it's secondary to the game itself. So it needs to be high energy, even if it's not loud (as is the case with most of Aizawa's lines). High Energy does not equal Loud

I was asked to come to a warehouse at midnight and given a long gray scarf. I had to lasso a bunch of targets, then use it in hand-to-hand combat fist against a robotic black cat. I was cut up and beaten badly in the process, but I emerged victorious. the producers came out of a back room and said in unison "You Booked It"
