I played CTR for a while and I got a few minor gripes, like how the relic races and collection arenas don't seem to scale with difficulty or how you don't get to play the Nitro Cart levels in Adventure, but nothing too major. Except for the Pit-Stop being incredibly, incredibly overpriced. One pack is 7500 coins, and you get 20-80 coins per race depending on the track (assuming you place first). The kicker is there are carts, costumes, and even characters you can ONLY GET from the shop.

Oh yeah, totally. I'd argue the order you play the games in is basically irrelevant. They're not direct continuations, and other than maybe a few key moments, 2 and 3 stand on their own from 1.
Though, 2 is still worth playing. Despite its bad rep, I adore that game for what it is, and would recommend a playthrough at one point or another!
But
DS2 feels clunky after playing DS3, but then so does DS1. Playing them in order is the best, though story wise it really doesnt matter.
So in the end it comes down to you

While DS2 gets a lot of bad rap for being the worst in the series, it's not actually bad. It has a few glaring flaws that I think show pretty bad if you move straight from 1 to 2 like I did.

There are a lot more gotcha moments. Rather than making avoiding death and exploring your top priority, grab a weapon you really like and go smash stuff
