OK, I've finally perfected the Gex scale:
On the far right is non-Gex, characters like Mario and other "kiddy" mascots. These are simply mascots who do not put effort into attitude due to simply denying said attitude as unneeded.
Then we have Light Gex, mascots like Sonic or Banjo and Kazooie. They have attitude but don't feel like they need to flaunt it to be cool, depending on the product they're in.
Then we get to Gex, characters who advertise and boast themselves with attitude in an attempt to gain an audience, but know that alone won't sell. Examples include Gex and the TMNT.
We get Hard Gex, where Awesome Possum and ~~Bubsy~~ Furry Gex live. These guys assume that all you need is attitude to work as a mascot.
Then we get into Gex Black. This is the very edge, where characters who swear, drink, cuss, and generally be awful people live. Not only do they have attitude, they are violent and aggressive about showing that they aren't kids games. This is where Kratos and Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal work

Keep in mind that murder, drinking, smoking, etc. alone don't qualify you for Gex Black. These are defined by tone and quality. If the character happens to Smoke but is still a wise-ass and willing to do good, like, say, Duke Nukem, he is a Gex to Hard Gex, depending on his game.
