The underlying pigment of the skin should be the same, but the surroundings of what that skin is around definitely would affect how the skin looks. It's a role icon, not a character, so I think it's fine to change the skin tones of the icons, whether it be light to dark or vice versa. Someone mentioned that BG had multiple skin tone changes too(one I recall does darken the tone a lot).

For the case of this judge icon, the colours used for the rest of the icon are way brighter and more saturated compared to the original, so I imagine that's part of the thought process for the designer.

I've seen shorts on youtube where they show some sort of Korean colour theory(I don't recall the name of the theory though), where they would match and see what colours suit you the most based off your skin tone, so that might be a possibility to take into account as well(I could just be stretching it ofc)

It’s just curious how it mostly happens from black -> caucasian. Every og black role icon with maybe exception butcher has been turned white at some point. The role icons where this happens the other way is waayyyyy less even though there are tons more white role icons.

Ana, violinist, flagger, judge, morti have all had it happened. Bg and maybe tg have just had a tan at best. Doc is the only one that had full ethnicity change. So why does it happen for black role icons but not nearly as much the other way around?

I honestly don’t see why this has to be such a big deal. Designers adjust all tones, not just skin tones to create proper contrast and visual balance. It’s part of the art process, not an agenda. Sometimes a lighter or darker (tint/shade) just works better for composition, not because of any hidden motive
