#can't access online matches in splatoon, no error code

I've been trying for a while to play splatoon online but for some reason i always get the generic "a communication error has occured" message and then booted out of the plaza. Im on an unmodded wii u using SSSL method, everything is set up correctly since ive been able to play previously.
