You have to do it from user settings on the console. Dashboard on the website is not supported

I entered the settings as you said and I changed what I wanted to change, but I can't modify my username, can I?

Unfortunately, no. It is only really possible to allow people to change stuff that is within the confines of what the original NNID settings page allows you to change.
