a permitted example: you can make the death massage say "Splatted by [insert weapon or entity name here]!" while displaying a different icon.

i play a lot of TF2, and in that game it's really important to know which classes are on the other team, what weapons are in use (e.g. what uber type, what sentry type) so you can adjust your positioning and teamwork accordingly, to know if you can take a 1v1 or if you need to run, etc. when I talk about gamesense and higher-level play, that's what I mean, doing these kinda calculations and observations to perform better at the game. it can be really fun if you do it well!
I don't play a lot of spoon but I have been told by ranked types that this is also a big element of that game; especially knowing what specials the other team has

Swapping subs and specials is completely different, that is literally changing weapons. Think of it as giving Scout's little shotgun more damage- which shouldn't be possible.

"Ranked" in Splatoon 1 atleast isn't as serious as you may think, not since save editing is rampant and rank segregation has been removed (meaning the highest rank can play with the lowest)

Players are still able to see exactly what gun/loadout I am using because the game shows that to you, as the match begins where both teams are seen in their spawn areas.

I have contacts and have spoken with people who play Splatoon competitively, neither of them had any problem with the death reason spoof because it is simply an issue that doesn't exist. It is not an intended mechanic sure, but it doesn't affect gameplay at all seeing as how you change nothing about your weapon.
