Maybe Aroma wasn't set to autoboot?

Try opening the health and safety app on the Wii U menu, with your SD card inserted - this should manually launch Aroma if it didn't load on startup

Sounds like aroma wasn't fully installed

Try the browser exploit, open wiiuexploit.xyz in your Wii U's internet browser and press the button, then hold X and see if you get EnvironmentLoader

You shouldn't need to change any settings - this webpage is just loading some files from your SD card

So if it doesn't work, the SD card might not be properly set up

It doesn't seem like your console is modded at this point, so, I would probably start over and follow https://wiiu.hacks.guide

I think I found the issue, I needed to select wii u menu to auto boot... does that seem correct?

Essentially it goes EnvironmentLoader > Aroma > Wii U Menu

EnvironmentLoader can be launched through the browser exploit, the health and safety app, or automatically on startup using PayloadLoader

Once in EnvironmentLoader, by default you have to navigate through menus to pick Aroma and then Wii U Menu, but this can be automated

So autoboot is basically automating all of these things
