Can't join Linux friend

My friend recently switched to Linux and got the game to run through Proton (tried 9.0-4 and 10.0-3). I'm still on Windows 10.

Every time we try to join one another we get a blank lobby screen, a "Waiting for Master" notice and, after a few seconds, a kick. The rundown name at the top right also bugs out.
We've tried restarting Steam and verifying files on both our ends, but nothing so far has worked or changed anything.

Yesnt, logs of levels is locally saved, actual game progress is saved with Microsoft’s servers iirc. You can mod your game so it is locally saved but idk how to do that

don't have any builds published rn but SimpleProgression on my github if you want to compile it yourself
