We'll need the log files that are mentioned in #bug-reporting to know if its your connection to playfab or smth else that's causing you to not be able to play with each other
#1281414730090811503 had a slew of examples for not being able to get into each other's sessions, is it something similar or different?

intalia creates a lobby. then player nick Ãvila join slots dauda, hackett and bishop. wat? 🙂
some vpn or upnp or firewall shittery has to be going on as Ãvila doesnt receive "ok join" message so it retries 2 more times until all slots consumed..

Yeah, that would be the probably thing
upnp, which is basically your or his router setup, could also be not liking each other and causing this
There's been plenty of past issues where people had to reset antivirus or routers in order to get things working again, but as with this game... that doesn't always work

I'm going to test it with my brother now, I'm going to turn off the firewall and if necessary the router.
Apparently I managed to create the lobby, even with the firewall turned on.

usually when 2 ppl can't connect, it usually turns out that the other was indeed vpn'ed, cloudflare warp for example .. testing out alternate internet (4g tether) usually gets ppl thru
