Game silently errors and exits when joining a friends lobby, only shows "Waiting for Master", there should be a popup or warning or details on why the game can't connect to the lobby with an error code, I think that's worthy of a bug report.
I used ProcMon found a log file and found the error, it's likely your firewall blocking outbound UDP ports 3478,4379,4380. It could be your router too. Problem is on the hosts end, the outbound host->member Accept P2P Connection message gets blocked

For Windows firewall, go to the windows firewall, go to Outbound rules, create a new Outbound rule, select type Port, select protocol UDP, and do "4379-4380" for the ports, then do allow connection, all domains, name it something, and save it. Repeat that for port 3478.
For router, use ipconfig in command prompt to find your "default gateway", type that IP into your browser for your router login page, log into the router using the details on the sticker, go to port forwarding. Now it's different for every router, but the general input is gonna be, any name, IPv4 (found in ipconfig), port 3478 internal, port 3478 external, UDP protocol. Repeat that for port 4379 and port 4380.
@frank herald Thanks for your input on the problem, but I seem to still be facing the same problem. At this point, it doesn't say "waiting for master" or anything, but he does take up one space in the lobby.
We cannot see his character and he cannot see ours, but we can see that he takes up one space and whenever another player that joins after them skips their space. Would this just be an internet issue because of how far away they live from me?
We used to be able to play just fine, but when a new player joined, he suddenly stopped being able to join anyone's games.
I think that's an internet issue, I had that issue when someone from Brazil hosted the lobby
Were you having a "waiting for master" problem originally
Initially we were just 2 players and we ran completely fine, but as soon as a third joined we hit the "waiting for master" issue
Then it spiralled to not even seeing his character in the lobby
I mean for p3 to see p1 it has to go to from p3 to host then from host to p1, so one of those node jumps could involve firewall problems.
Does host see his character well? If p1 hosts does p2 and p3 have ghost problems? Also try a different person or group in this server see if them hosting could fix it.
It's most likely just too slow of a host to deal with those distances, you could check the log file next time you see the visual bug and try to find a relevant error
