I've only completed the main objective of R8B1 once, but I have been credited with completing it twice with the secondary objective as well. A few days ago, I tried the secondary and got to the Kraken fight, died, and returned to menu instead of returning to a checkpoint. I was by myself with bots, although I'm not sure if that's relevant.
