#Game is still crashing, in multiple ways. (Seemingly fixed)

Sorry for the novel

I posted on here earlier, saying that my game was crashing specifically during the drop, with a lil error box with the GTFO logo appearing before the game closed. Sometimes I'd get past the drop just fine and be able to play through a mission, sometimes I'd crash mid-drop. After talking to somebody for a while (Thankyou Minnowz, for real) they recommended that I close anything that doesn't have to do with windows, via task manager, and disable "on startup" programs in task manager.

I did that, and the game seemed to have been working fine, I was able to get past the drop more than 10 times without any crashes, and play through the mission. These missions were the first two in R1.

I decided to try loading into the first R7 mission, just to see if everything is okay, and now I'm crashing again. This time it's just closing the game out without any sort of signal that it has crashed, it also for some reason freezes my discord and I have to restart discord.

The things that I've tried so far have been: Make sure that I'm not overclocked, make sure all of my drivers are up-to-date, fully delete the entire game and reinstall fresh, validate steam files, close everything that I don't need via task manager, including GoG, Epic Launcher, Xbox game bar, and Bittorrent; Delete the "Generated Icons" file, disabling V-synch in game and making sure my in-game resolution is the same as my desktop.

My computer has a GTX 3070, 16gb ram and plenty of storage space, I have never encountered any issues like this with any other game, unless I install a ton of mods.

Please god I just really want to play this game, this is getting insanely frustrating. Does anybody have any idea what this problem could be? I feel like I'm missing something super obvious, and that if this ever gets fixed I'm going to feel very stupid and annoying, lol.

I do use "Logitech G-hub", that is always on in the background and I cant disable it, and use my mouse at the same time.

Edit: This really could just be a coincidence, or maybe GTFO triggered a pre-existing error, but my computer just bluescreened immediately after I manually closed the game. Has anybody had this happen before?

Not going to lie, my 2 cents is that your issue is more fundamental rather than a "GTFO crashes". I think something's borked on your end. Did you try disabling XMP?

white bluff
#

How do I go about doing that? I've just nebver had this issue with any other game and it's weird

#

Well I can probably google that lol, no worries

#

No issue with anything else though, warhammer total war 3, alien isolation, holdfast, foxhole, etc etc etc. I'll google that xmp thing after this virus scan is done though, thanks.

#

Yep xmp is disabled already, I know that it's not anybody's job to help with this lol, and if it is something fundamentally wrong with the PC even moreso, but is there anything else that could be wrong? It's just so weird that it's really only happening in GTFO. I play tons of other games.

#

Only other time I have issues is when I install a bunch of mods on something and dont think about compatibility.

I do have an error message, I cant post the whole thing here though but

#

It starts with this:

It might be a hrdware error? Like something up with the graphics card? That's just a guess I cant make heads or tails of that shit.

Is a refund at all an option here? I cant fix this, I have no idea what to do but I've played for more than 2hrs so I cant get anything from steam.

Hey, have you tried checking event viewer in windows to see if any other programs are hanging (like discord) and if so, what error logs they give?

#

Also I'm not familiar with that error message but I'd say its something windows related so you could do an "sfc /scannow" in the windows command prompt to see if that fixes the issue

One more thing I would advise is to try and move the game installation to another drive, like from an ssd to another or to an hdd

grand heart
#

Okay, I've looked up the error online, have you tried enabling desktop composition? It seems you can do so in your pc settings (I'll attach pics as well) -> system -> pc specifications -> advanced settings -> under performance, click on settings -> 4th option to toggle.

grand heart
#

4th option here

#

they are in hungarian, dont rely on the text, if you need help ping me

#

(also its win11 but it should almost be the same in win10)

white bluff
#

Hey, thanks for the advice. So I've treid a bunch of times to find the option to enable desktop composition, I couldnt find it anywhere. When I asked on Reddit I was told that on win11 you just.... dont have the option to enable it? Like I've been on those same pages and there just isnt any toggle involving enabling/disabling desktop composition @grand heart

#

Honestly, I dont really think that it's the game's fault directly but idk. Seems like it mightve just triggered something weird that was always going on in the background. Tempted to do a factory reset, but I'm gonna try what you recommended earlier involving commandpropt

#

I'll also dry moving it into another drive, I didnt think to do that that's at least something to try

#

So to do the sfc/scannow would i just type that command into the prompt? Or does it need to be prefaced or followed by the name of another application? I can also just google this lol, thanks a bunch

Nvm figured it out, doing the scan now

#

The commmand prompt thing didn't find any issues, some people online say that you might have to restart your computer and run it multiple times to find anything though

grand heart
#

Okay so lets see

#

I'm using windows 11 22H2 and I do not have any issues with crashing whatsoever

#

Its not an OS fault

#

It must be something on your end but I have no idea what

#

Can you dm me the crash logs as well? @white bluff

#

Its in local appdata\10 Chambers\GTFO\GTFO.<latest date>_<your name>_MASTER

#

and/or Player.log

#

I've also found out on a website that you should be able to start this desktop composition thing as a service too, but its hard to find the corresponding one in hungarian since the translation is weird on them....

#

So you can go in services (services.msc) and find "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" and set its startup type to automatic then restart your pc

#

idk if you can still find it in newer windows but if you can, then its worth a try

I think it might be our solution

#

@grand heart Hey man sorry I was at work

#

I'll follow what you told me to do now though! Thankyou so much

#

I sent you a few DMs explaining something. Gonna get to work on finding the crash logs for ya too

white bluff
#

This has been tentatively resolved I think, thankyou to @grand heart for being amazingly clutch and walking me through some options.

It seems like GTFO was demanding more virtual memory than my computer was allocating, so if anybody else is having crashing issues like mine, try going into "settings>about>advanced system settings".

When you're there, go to "settings" under the performance option, then at the top of the box click on the "advanced" tab and find "virtual memory" at the bottom. I think my personal issue was that my computer had only allocated 8gb of virtual memory at the max, so all that I did was check the box saying "System managed size" specifically under "front:c". Restarted my computer, and this seems to have fixed the issue.

It looks like GTFO was demanding more memory than my computer was allotting. I haven't had any crashes for a while now after doing the "virtual memory" thing.
