They're probs gonna function a lot like real firearms at the very least, most likely they're gonna be using either a common-ish cartridge for the gear they hand out to the prisoners, or one that's inspired by them. Might of course also be a custom-made cartridge, but I highly doubt it, considering the circumstances

Hm, well, SMGs do tend to have less powder charge, though the mechanics of a gun can make a big difference there.
