With no classes then, would your character be randomly chosen, or would you pick the character in your loadout, similar to how payday does jt
Character selection will work exactly as in PD2, at least that's our plan right now. You'll be able to choose any character if you host the game, and the first one to join will have the remaining three characters to choose from, and so on.
I'm personally not a fan of how they did it in OTWD, where two players are allowed to play as the same character on the same server. It feels weird. Sure, it solves the problem when two players play together who prefer to play as the same game character, but still...
...and @prime mirage - I can confirm what Aory and Honey said: There are no classes in GTFO, you choose your loadout to suit your play style so you essentially create your own class.

Also, @clear phoenix - VR support is very unlikely. We have no experience adapting games to VR and we don't use VR ourselves in our spare time. In short, it would be a high risk undertaking and frankly; just making a "regular", non-VR game is high risk enough.

And I read that you were discussing revives. Aory and Honey are absolutely correct in that medpacks only restore HP and are not required for revives. Every player in the team is needed alive in order to progress and so you have infinite revives. If your follow up question is "but won't that make the game super easy?" I can tell you immediately that it won't. GTFO is really effin' hard.

Re: Melee mods, the demo we've shown at E3 etc has had the same properties on all melee weapons, only visual differences like Aory said. We will however have stats-differences for them eventually.
Is dismembering a thing? like if you have a sharp weapon for example (came up now in my mind) or like shooting one spot, and if they so, are they gonna move slower (when taking out legs), or doing less dmg if they loose an arm?

@prime mirage There is a shove attack, yes - but you do that with your melee weapon. If you have one of your firearms equipped and push the shove button you immediately switch to your melee weapon and perform a shove. It's a clever way to switch to melee and put it to good use with one single button press. If you want to shoot after the shove, you'll have to switch back to one of your firearms.

There's some dismemberment and blowing holes in enemies and so on, but at this point it doesn't affect the enemy's fighting ability. It's just to give you satisfying feedback as you shoot at them.

Melee is not restricted but you have to charge up an attack to be really effective, and you can't walk around with the melee weapon charged-up for more than a few seconds before the character swings the melee weapon automatically.
@narrow kettle If you press the shove button while having a firearm equipped, the shove comes quicker than if you manually switched to melee and then pressed the shove button. That way it becomes an "elite tactic". 😝
Will there be significant lore? As in, nore than "you're prisoners, go down scary big hole"?

Hi, me and my friend are really big on the horror genre and have a hard time finding scary co-op games.
My question is in regards to the scare factor. I see a lot of gameplay of us attacking them, but is there going to be times where they are attacking us and we are trying to escape?
Also are there going to be some jump scares hidden throughout the levels that are randomly generated so they're hard to anticipate?

I've played pd2 a lot and one of the worst thing in this game was hackers (and too many DLC bit this isn't what i came for) do you have any plans to reduce the number of player with hack? (Sorry if Reding me hurts but i'm not native english)
@fathom lotus As far as we know there won't be any scripted "escape missions". However, you'll most likely be in a situation like that if you're not careful. GTFO is a lot about managing your recourses, and if you don't do that properly while running into a horde, you'll most likely be in for a scary and stressful situation. There's no info about any jumpscares, but I personally doubt there'll be any scripted ones, at least.

The longer answer is: During the development of GTFO we had to agree on that this is and action game with a lot of suspense and horror elements, not a pure horror game. Because if this was a horror game I would most likely remove almost all weapons and take away most of the sense of control the player can feel, if you see what I mean?
Since we still wanted a lot of action (to play to our strengths, to facilitate coop and to work with the rest of the vision for the game), this was a call we had to make fairly early.
So with that as a starting point we are trying to sprinkle the game with elements of the player not being in full control of her surroundings from time to time, and both of your examples fit that description really well;)
Yup, that makes perfect sense! I was thinking a mission or two where it changes things up a bit and your team is at a disadvantage and you need to escape and regroup, which would make it feel scarier in those particular missions. But the majority of the game should definitely be an action game rather than a horror game with limited control, that I agree wholeheartedly.
Will we have Matchmaking?
Simon has stated that there will be some form of matchmaking, but they also want to make sure a new player doesn’t get matched with an advanced group in a lower sublevel (ie higher difficulty) expedition.

Simon told me on Gamescom that they think about that as Steve stated, a ranking system but it could have bad benefits in term for w8 time or so, or it is hard to like get e proper system to work well

Also, if you are going for a silent takedown on a sleeper, you need to check and make sure there aren't others within a few feet!
If there are, you need to time your strikes to happen simultaneously and make sure they are all dead quickly.

That’s about where I am... the sleeper/early enemies move and act almost identical to the thrall. I just hope there isn’t a cursed thrall analogue in GTFO. Since primary attack for smaller enemies is melee, having one explode in your face would suck!

Destiny’s “Boomers” are a pain in the ass, too. They typically stand on ledges above you and toss an endless stream of what can only be described as molotov cocktails from hell down on you, which do AoE explosive damage on impact and then burn damage for about 10 seconds after. When you try to shoot them, they pop a shield that HEALS them!
I have a question about the whole prisoner thing. If they players are convicted criminals, do they have military training that makes the warden select them for this stuff, are they given training in prison, or are they just sent down without any military skills?

The impression I get from talking with Simon and Ulf (along with a lot of my own thoughts on the characters) is that the Warden himself is a shady character that owes some powerful people a lot of money. He gets word about this "abandoned" government research facility that did some nasty, probably illegal, research projects, and recruits the meanest, toughest four prisoners to do his dirty work. Access to this research facility is either on prison grounds, or very near the prison.
As for military training, that is likely, possibly as mercenaries.

How does the gear assortment work in-game? From the bits and pieces I saw we have a primary, a secondary, a melee, a tool, and a medkit slot. That seem about right or is there more to it?

@mild ravine We don't plan to have players weapons of mass destruction. Don't expect mini guns and grenade launchers. No part of GTFO is run-and-gun or "arcade-y" in any way.
The tone of GTFO very much relies on you feeling vulnerable and outnumbered. You'll get weapon to defend yourself, not to start a war. 😉

No silencers, because that would break the concept of the game.

Yeah, I think there is some form of story/lore being written and produced, but right now, the devs are focused on creating a quality game. How the story is incorporated in the game (either through reading virtual character cards/profiles (more likely) or through FMV cutscenes (less likely), is yet to be determined, as far as I know.
Either way, there will be some sort of backstory to GTFO.

I think the enemies in GTFO were created as a result of a combination of things. Alien bacteria, Government experimentation, radioactive by-products, etc.

For those that have played it, how many tools can a character bring with them on a mission? Also, what type of tools did you bring when you did play and what did you think of them?
u can choose primray weapons, which are, a pistol, an smg, a light Dmr type of gun, a light Rifle type of weapon. Then there is a special wepaon slot, which you can choose a Gausse rifle, a heavy DMR, Shotgun and more,
On the equipmentg tools, so far what i saw, in my Game with Simon, was a Glue Gun (which you can slow enemies down or reinforce doors) , a Sentry gun (selfexplanatory, C4 which can kill you (seen in trailer xD) a Life Scanner, which can tell you how many enemeys are behind a door/wall and if they are commons or special enemies. You can also Highlight the Heads of the Enemies during a loud scene, to help your mates to get better headshots.
Also seen in the trailer another scnaning device to scan the Room directly for a bit
interesting, i can see how even by a lack of firepower the concept of vulnerability is reinforced

Well @blazing crown , dir Most Situations the primary weapon should be all right, for heavier firepower/response for a huge wave u would suggest using the special weapon, wanna point out that ammunition for the special weapons, are a indeed smaller, like you have really less rounds available (maybe like 10-40 depends which special weapon)

@inland fable I think they answered that earlier (like 1 week ago) the thing is, if they do that for the Ingame voice chat, many people, who playing with thier friends are gonna use anyways like discord, or teamspeak or any other voice chat. so that would be a bit of extra work, but also a bit wasted from thier end, cuz people could like not understanding thier mates

As far as I know there's no mention of a trade function. You obtain gear by collecting materials during missions and completing them.
Yeah trading wouldn't make much sense with the systems we know about for obtaining/upgrading gear so I reckon not.
There's no trading, no. You scavenge for commodities and materials ("scav") in the Complex and use them to build your arsenal/toolset. The game is designed to not reward players for reaching a scav box first, since this would encourage players to depart from the group and run ahead.

Do the levels vary visually/aesthetically? Will I find that deeper facilities appear to have had different purposes (e.g. higher up might have been storage depots while lower down might be factories or laboratories)
I've only really seen the same sort of 'rocky hollowed out cave' in all of the footage I've seen and I'm somewhat worried about levels all being 'the same'
Yeah all the footage is from the same area (the Complex I think?), there are a few more, though I don't know if you get to visit different ones within the same mission.
So far we have only shown the mining and storage settings. There are other interior sets in the Complex that haven't been revealed yet.

Private lobbies will likely be a thing, but the game is being designed for four player teams.
Yes you can host private lobbies. The game is best experienced together with three other players but you will be able to play only two people as well.

You won't be able to compete with the members of your team, although you can of course compete as a team against other teams to see who can beat a certain expedition in the shortest time.
It's not a game mode though. You'll have to challenge and set up the rules on your own.

Question I've been thinking of... there are expeditions up to and probably over 6 hours long. Is there some way to set mission parameters to set the estimated length of the expedition to say, 2 hours?

You can't set expedition parameters by yourself, but most expeditions will be more "snack size" so it shouldn't be a problem. The longer expeditions might come as "rewards" for teams who dig really deep...

You're gonna want to play GTFO with friends rather than pubs if you can, yes. It's a game that will demand a lot of the team in terms of communication and coordination, so a tight team with shorthand lingo is the best!

Let me explain, it's not against you, I love the work you do on GTFO, but many games boast of having a terrifying atmosphere and being tough. But after a few hours we lose that fear. How does GTFO handle this? To keep the player in suspense every moment?

I'd guess that the variety of monsters should keep it interesting for a while. Then throw different combinations of monsters in to change the pace up a bit...
I'm going to be honest and say it's very hard to near impossible to keep someone scared and fearful of an area they work and play in for hundreds to thousands of hours. Suspense and uneasiness is a different story but that too fades. The dynamic music setup Simon is behind I believe will certainly help but honestly I'm more interested in the teamwork and co-op elements. Less about the horror aspect.

Enemy encounters are also going to be dynamic. You'll not know what you are going to be facing from one expedition to the next. Or even from one team wipe to the next...

I get that but there's a finite number of monsters and specials. Eventually you'll get used to a horde randomly dropping on ya or a big daddy grabbing you and carrying you away.
I'm just talking from personal experience here. Left 4 dead as a kid scared me for the first few hours. But after playing through all the campaigns and encountering the same zombies each map I got used to it and wasn't scared. It became more a team game.
I think gtfo will have a longer horror shelf life than left 4 dead though.
What they will add in the future will probs be to stop us from getting used to it but Would take alot of work

There are two types of fear: The fear you feel by immersing yourself into the situation of your in-game alter ego, meaning the fear of being eaten by monsters. This fear will fade rather quickly no matter what we do because it builds on fear of the unknown and we can't introduce new unknown factors in a rapid enough pace to keep players on edge. However, the other type of fear is the fear you as a player feel when the stakes are high and you know that small mistakes will wreck your attempt at finishing the expedition. This fear will live much longer, and I think the two fears will feed each other and make the game scary for a longer time.
That second fear is pretty fucking true lol. Shit can get stressful in these games.

Couldn't have said it better, Simon. There's one thing when you are just taking out a few sleepers with sledge hammers. It's quite another when you are trying to get a scan done to go through a door with a horde fighting your every step.
Yes, and if the game is set in a horror environment with music that makes you feel uneasy and creepy monsters that may or may not be lurking around the next corner... It's a potent experience.
How do the hordes work? Do they appear according to the noise we make? Or does it appear randomly regardless of our degree of discretion ?

I just want to adjust your expectations when it comes to the horror aspect of the game. We know people won't be scared forever by the monsters and creepy environments alone, but the game is very much about always being outgunned and low on health and that will add a huge stress factor to the overall experience that becomes even more powerful when the game's setting is so creepy.

Hm, there's no way to stealth an entire expedition, not right now. The game forces you to make noise at one point or another. The final game will allow more ways to avoid confrontation through the use of finite commodities, but I can't say rn if that will make it possible to stealth an entire expedition. Maybe a very short one.
I also think it's random. A door that opens with too much noise, an alarm that rings, all this to put us in trouble

It'd be cool if parts of the environment changes on wipes. So like a door you open that squeaks in one run may not in another so you have to take a chance on if you want to use that commodity to quiet the area. that'd be cool
Yes we have played around with the idea of having doors that make noise accidentally (as opposed to doors that "announce" that they will make noise as they have visible alarm horns attacked to them) but it might only be frustrating to get RNG slapped in the face like that with no way of knowing beforehand... That's Rage quit time.
Maybe if there was a way to foresee if the door would squeak, like a tool or something. I don't know.

Defining modifiers/mutators: things you turn on/off to change the experience. There are tons in Payday 2, they are just silly things to change the way the game plays. They dont have to be silly though

The game sort of relies on modifiers to create variation - infinite combinations of map layouts, monsters, monster placement, environmental hazards, objective, etc. So yeah, I'd say there will be modifiers but you can't choose them on your own.

We currently don't know what the minimum recommended system requirements are yet.
Only thing we know is the rigs they use at the office are PCs from 2014-2015 using i7 4790, 16GB RAM and GTX 970.
ah big question, I'm getting friends interested and I really want to know if there will be a bundle pack for the game (buy 4 copies at a discounted price or some such or even just buy 1 get 1 copy half off) I hate having co-op games that I have to play by myself because nobody else wants to drop the money on it/can't spare the money. If the price point is decent (30 dollars ish) then that is a different story. Perhaps we could get temporary trial keys on purchase? I just need to get them hooked enough to buy it if the price point is decent lol

A valid question that has appeared time and time again. However we do not have a definitive answer as of this momemt. Keep an eye for announcememts and more info as it gets closer to release. They (the devs) will most definitely answer it when they have the details hammered out. For now the focus is building the game. :)

Just understand the game isn't being built to cater to the public matchmaking crowd. And grieving matches by leaving is a very very small issue not worth frustrating players in a pve game who might just DC by accident through internet issues. Player drop in fully fixes any issues with rage quit dcs.

It's a 4 player pve game if there isn't player drop in I'd be very surprised honestly. I don't think they've ever explicitly said if there is or isn't though so keep that in mind.
Personally I still don't feel there should be dc punishment and it ESPECIALLY shouldn't decrease your damage or anything in game.
Then when u play versus with a team of 4 split The people who have the most hours on it get the ebst AI with fucking aimbot then the shit players get the AI thats stupid af

It does depend on the type of player. You're on the right path with not having too many idiots in the game. because the game has been marketed so far to be a team game.
