Odd text artifacts are appearing on many pages in our wiki. They tend to disappear when the page is purged (as in the attached image); other times, however, when a page is edited, portions of the page text will be copied to the end of the page. See https://kylaris.miraheze.org/wiki/Modern_pentathlon_at_the_2026_Summer_Invictus_Games?oldid=86517 for an example ("mer Invictus Games}}")
#Strange, extraneous text appearing in wiki pages
50 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
this is user error, mediawiki does not add text like that randomly
i've had this happen when i've opened a page to edit, edited nothing, and then just saved the page. i get the skepticism, but i'm fairly certain something odd is going on with the software here. besides, we still have this related issue of random text bits being rendered on the page and then disappearing on purge/refresh
since the extraneous text was removed in a recent edit means you're likely dealing with caching, which is normal
do you use the visual editor?
i almost always use the source editor
another example, just happened when i saved from source editor
and just to be clear, this issue only started happening maybe a couple of weeks ago
it's definitely an issue with https://kylaris.miraheze.org/wiki/Template:Spaced_en_dash
curious, how exactly?
is there something going on with some module or something
at the very least this one is
what else could it be?
ah, that one might be
can't tell which page the kata one is from but I'd imagine it's similar
I can't see anything you're seeing
well, it goes away after you refresh or purge the page
but both cases have some &...; html escapes
I don't know much about the mediawiki parser maybe it's getting confused or something
i would hope not given that it is recommended https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Newlines_and_spaces#Alternatives
MediaWiki
Newlines and spaces make up sentences in a wiki.
Newlines create paragraphs and when you are writing sentences, a single newline is treated as a space, but a double newline results in a paragraph break.
On the other hand, spaces, particularly leading spaces at the beginning of a line, are used to create preformatted text blocks.
It can also be u...
to be clear, everything besides mer Invictus Games}} is not an user error and some parser freakiness
Parser freakiness is extremely worrying
well I can't replicate so I have no idea
just one more bit of evidence -- I opened this section in the source editor, hit "preview" before changing anything whatsoever, and this happened
highlighted text appeared out of nowhere
i've noticed this does tend to happen when you hit "preview" specifically
is this a middle click thing? what browser and os are you using
not a middle click thing, it happens regardless. i'm using firefox on windows 11
Just wanted to put another pin in this -- it's still happening
still can't reproduce on firefox on windows 11
In this example, You closed the table with |}So everything behind that (marked in grey) is not considered to be part of the table.
As it seems to double what is above, I suggest deleting the part after |}
Yes, I understand how the table formatting works and I do delete these stray bits when they appear. The problem is that they are appearing spontaneously
Do you use Visual Editing?
I almost always use source editing
Creating tables in VE can produce unwanted glitches like that.
I never seen this happen with the source editor.
(Have been editing tables for over 15 years)
You might want to clear your cache, perhaps that could contribute to such issues. But often they only occur in VE, not in SE
One more data point -- these artifacts are appearing on special pages like Recent changes as well
and again, they disappear on refresh
(I'm referring to the 17 and 13)
They are probably two different issues
Or maybe not
An exorcist sounds like a good solution from @violet pollen
We haven't had any other reports of strangeness like this
it happens on my laptop and desktop
