#I can’t figure out infoboxes

How do I use infoboxes effectively for my wiki? Are the infoboxes supposed to pop up as red links in the preview or are they supposed to be shown as actual infoboxes? I’ve been trying to research how these work and I can’t seem to figure it out. I’m really new to this, so I’m not sure

Here is my wiki link. I’ve been trying to make an infobox for the “Paradise” page:

Hi! First off, have you read [[Infoboxes]] ?

We cannot see the Paradise page, as the wiki appears to be private

zenith badger
#

Oh yeah. That was intentional. I completely forgot

#

And I’ve been looking through every other wiki page on infoboxes except for the Miraheze one

cyan vector
#

The one I linked should be pretty helpful since other platforms can have specific things that do not work here

zenith badger
#

Ah, okay. I see

#

I’ll see what I can do

To answer your questions though, a working infobox should not show up as a red link. In a nutshell, infoboxes are templates, just a specific type of template sometimes. You first have to create an infobox template page, and then call it on the page. A red link means you haven't created an infobox template yet. This is explained more clearly in the guide

#

And to prevent a common mistake, an infobox template is an empty infobox with no values. You provide the values on the regular page when you call it. Again, that should make more sense after reading the guide if it's confusing for now

#

So do I have to input the infobox values into the template page itself in order to use it in other pages?

cyan vector
#

the opposite

zenith badger
#

What

cyan vector
#

if you mean the values that change

#

the labels are defined in the infobox template

#

templates have parameters, and that's what you use to input data into them

zenith badger
#

Ah

cyan vector
#

Are templates a new concept to you or just infoboxes? If you're new to wiki editing, I'd recommend experimenting with simple templates first before diving info infoboxes which can get more complex pupCoffeeMH

I’m very much new to everything about wiki editing. I’m always the type of person to go from step 1 to step 17

#

Are there any simpler templates you recommend?

cyan vector
#

You could try making your own templates to understand the idea. Even if you don't have a function in mind it can be sandbox templates. A common thing to make also is a "message box" or "mbox" that is put at the top of the page with various messages, for example "this page is a stub". You could try making this template with either a table, or a div element

cyan vector
zenith badger
#

Cool. I’ve been wondering how those work, too, so that’d be nice

#

I still don’t understand how I’m supposed to format the template pages though

#

I can clearly see that I can link to the template pages but

cyan vector
#

No fancy formatting necessary, treat them as regular pages for now. The only thing specific to templates is parameters

#

You do not link but transclude them. Please read through the guide carefully first

zenith badger
#

I can’t comprehend things to save my life I’m so sorry

#

I’m trying to read through this

#

Now I’m even more confused

#

Seriously, what am I supposed to put into the template pages

#

Putting the templates into the page just isn’t working

zenith badger
#

I’ve been trying to figure this out for the last one and a half hours

#

I’m still confused

#

I’ve been reading countless articles and I still don’t get it

#

Nothing is working

#

Please, what do I do

cyan vector
#

@storm niche hi, would you have a moment to help this user? I'm unavailable currently

@zenith badger two questions, since if we started explaining now we would be inevitably repeating the guides you just read:

  1. Have you tried making simple templates following the guides? Many things click in practice.
  2. What exactly is confusing? Please do not answer "everything", if many things are, start with one

The problem is that we are unable to see what it looks like.
Could you temporarily enable viewing, or give some of us access?
We can only tell you where you can find info on how Templates work.
You could look at [[dev:Category:Templates]] and see how they are build.
Look at the source code (click on edit and see what is in the edit window.)
And indeed follow the links already given by Xena.

  1. I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be putting in the template page. I managed to make one where it says “how to itembox 101” but that’s it. Every time I tried to put the template into the template page, it said there was a loop of the page calling itself
  2. I just want to know what I put in the template page itself and what I do with the templates. I’ve read it over and over again and I still don’t get it
