Shouldn't oven chimneys be able to be smelted?

I an om 1.12.4 and I have pit kilned the same 4 oven chimneys 8 times and they still have not smelted. Why? Is this a bug? Is this my doing?

Not how oven curing works, read the field guide more carefully
The short of it is:
Bottom oven with top oven on top, chimneys behind, surrounded by insulatinh blocks such as bricks or more uncured chimneys
Add wood to the bottom oven and light it, the oven components will cure
