Some ores, dusts and chemicals are hazardous and can cause negative effects or even kill you if they are carried in your inventory. When carried, they are displayed on screen with a Status Effect.
Certain equipment such as masks, gloves, and the hazardous material suit can be used to counter these effects.
The easiest way to prevent hazardous effects is to not pick up the dangerous items at all.
Filling your inventory with Rocks, for example, will let you pick and choose which items you want to pick up, letting you deal with the hazardous ones later.
Hazardous materials only deal damage while they are in your inventory, but that doesn't apply to other containers!
Hazardous materials will not deal damage while they are in another container such as a Backpack or Vessel. Right-clicking while holding a vessel will allow direct transfer of its contents to and from containers.
The Face Mask provides protection from any Inhalation hazards, such as Arsenicosis.
The Rubber gloves can either be made from Leather and Latex, or out of Rubber Sheets. They provide protection from any Skin Contact hazards, such as Beryllium Dust.
First, knap the leather into mittens.
Mittens are then soaked in Vinegar, a mixture of fruit and alcohol.
Prepared leather gloves are then heated in a vat with Vulcanized Latex, one step away from rubber.
Finally, the latex-soaked gloves are heated in an Oven.
A completed Hazmat suit provides immunity from every hazard, even radiation. It is made in an LV Assembler from Polyethylene and Polyvinyl Chloride.

In case you do get heavily exposed to a hazard, there are some Medicines that can help you recover.
Basic Pills are the most primitive and easy to make, but most come with Negative Side Effects. Tablets and Salvos are more effective and have less side effects, but they require LV equipment and more advanced resources to make.
This is The Ultimate cure for ALL the hazards and the ONLY effective cure to Radiation. However, it is also the most Expensive and Difficult to make, requiring HV tier equipment and advanced materials.
If all else fails, bringing along a bed to respawn is a good idea.
If you don't have access to Wool or String, you can also make a Thatch Bed.
Arsenicosis is an illness caused by inhaling Arsenic from its dust, vapor or Realgar. It slowly increases hunger, followed by nausea, and eventually death.

Asbestosis is an illness caused by inhaling Asbestos dust. If carried for long enough, it causes hunger.
