I'm at a point where I'd like to explore the Beneath, so have been looking for the "best food" to boost my hp.
Making a stack of sandwiches or pizzas that all have the same max-nutrient ingredients doesn't seem super fun to me though. I'd end up focusing on just a few food sources and have no reason to explore all the different foods in the pack. Why would I go out fishing for small mouth bass, spending time pickling squash (yum?), or searching another continent for new fruit trees? I can just grow a big field of grain and potatoes, and breed a whole lot of cows for a good health boost ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I'd love to see a cross between Spice of Life Carrot and Apple Pie editions added to the pack
SoL Carrot edition:
- Pro: The total unique foods a player eats corresponds with a permanent health boost (typically something like 10 foods to 0.5 hearts)
- Con: All food is counted equally. Eating a raw blueberry contributes the same amount as a steak and cheese sandwich
SoL Apple Pie edition:
- Pro: Each food contributes based on it's complexity. So, simple foods like a raw beet might only provide 0.2, while a sandwich could provide 4.5 to your total
- Con: It only tracks the foods you've recently eaten, so it's basically the same as the TFC nutrition system
If we had a system that provided a permanent health boost from eating lots of different complex foods, I think it would encourage players to gather, grow, breed, hunt, fish, and cook all the cool foods in the pack. I don't think it would replace the TFC nutrition, but could compliment it really well.
