so a tty only distro
sure
but it’s cool!!
🤔
ok anyways im just doing this for fun so uhh possibly nothing :P
well uhh it has only a text mode, only unicode characters (braille for “pixels” allowed), custom software adapted to this and also that one image format that im thinking about making
wait hold on do i even need an answer to this other than “im doing this for fun so why do u gaf what makes this stand out” bru
a whar
windows manager
astolfOS > terminal linux
twin 🥹✌️
uhh sure not gonna be too hard ig
who knows maybe
oh cool
cool
also there's gnu screen
and tmux
what
what if this is astolfOS 🤨
no its literally just a bunch of terminals
its a terminal emulator
you have terminal 1 and terminal 2 and they both run fish because you should be using fish
we need someone who can actually code to help with astolfOS
im just gonna make my own stuff im lazy but not THAT laxy
right now its a hyprland config
BASH
its easier to just use alt + num
oh nvm
i beg u help us
what do we actually need to code tho
ooh yes good idea i’ll add that to terminal linux
userspace
we need to fix a lotta things and swip to swaybg or swww
hyprpaper is having a lot of compatability issues with every vm ive tried
swww?
guys pls stop talking about astolfOS here it’s offtopic!!
ok
yeah
lmao
peak?
Not really
Thats only if you made the project for a specific purpose in mind
Hmm
Maybe you’ll wanna make a DE that runs in tty instead
yes a TDE
im planning this
btw should it be /bin/tde or /sbin/tde?
/usr/bin/tde
/usr????
application binaries should install to /usr/bin if they are managed by the system package manager
otherwise they should install to /usr/local/bin
bro tde is NOT an ordinary app 😭
apps run ON TOP of tde
it is still an application
like any DE its an application
hm
only system essentials like coreutil installs to /bin
and /sbin is for sysadmin tools like fsck
mmm ok
although technically speaking on most modern distros /bin is symblinked to /usr/bin
so the difference is only conceptual
but still
/bin/tde it is coz i consider it an essential or else it would literally just be an ordinary terminal distro :P
thats not really how this works
you'll run into problems on a bunch of package managers if you install it to /bin
including arch i dont think arch lets packages touch /bin
yep
there it is
/bin conceptually speaking is only for essentials which are shells and coreutils and nothing else
-# this is just a suggestion, right?
i guess anything said to you can be treated as a suggesting and you can invent your own convention
but people wont like it if you drift from the standard too much
it's only tde going into /bin man 😭
that's basically all of the deviation
but understandable, people like linux distros the way they are and it's not fun to remember a new convention
its not about "not fun" its about there is no reason to
the current convention is pretty straightforward and wide accepted and there is no reason to adopt a new one
practically speaking there is no actual difference between putting in /bin or /usr/bin since /bin is likely gonna be symblinked to /usr/bin
but if you were to try to install to /bin in packages most package managers doesnt allow that
but.. tde isn't a package if that's what ur thinking
its an app
apps can be packaged into packages
and thats how they are usually distributed
i guess you can argue that tde can be thought of as a shell but
i think i wont have any problem with tde and package managers tbh
but thx for all the info
given the complexity of it exceeds what a shell is supposed to do that isnt really fitting
np
-# and why won't i have a problem? it's pre-installed
-# so there is no installing to be done :D and no package managers to deal with yayyyy
also fun fact:
all the pre-installed binaries in my distro will have a src folder for their parent directory (yes even /sbin has a src folder for /sbin/init 😭)
so u can peek at how terribly i designed terminal linux yayyy
@coral oracle quick q: by coreutils u mean stuff like ls?
yes
stuff like ls mv cp mkdir cat
etc etc
kk thx
--[ u: fluffistical ]-- received a thank you cookie!
yep they deserve it

pardon my terrible writing (i write in cursive 🥀) but @opaque crown is this cool taskbar?
yes
thx
-# it's tui btw 👍
Austin received a thank you cookie!
nah, its good because its pui, paper user interface
lmao
is this project not just like.... a distro with just tty and a custom shell?
and a bunch of tui stuff?
lol
it’ll have a text desktop environment with a neat lil taskbar and maybe even a window manager for multiple apps at once
but if that’s what u meant then i guess so
i am a madlad after all
ladmad
a lad is mad
That's mine
yes but can i add as image to terminal linux 👍
