#how do i select sound card in alsamixer?

i open up the tui and select the card and no sound comes out
i know its the right card bc it dissapears when i remove the device
i have made sure that sound should be playing and that the volume is not muted
the sound is even coming out of my docks sound card but i couldnt change that
what am i doing wrong?
also changing it to my laptops builtin sound doesnt work either
pavuctrl lists a lot more sound cards for some reason but setting an other as default doesnt seem to change anything
