i generally don't support WM/DEs on servers because they should use their compute for someting useful, but if you really want to have one I would probably go with XFCE

@ember prairie Have you considered running a VNC server using Xvnc and just starting the program with the resulting X11 display as its DISPLAY environment variable? You shouldn't need any desktop environment or WM whatsoever to run a single program with a display.
