I use Arch Hyprland for quite a while now and no issues so far. I decided to delete windows and extend my storage. I used gparted to delete the partition and now I need to use gparted live to extend the drive. The problem is, i dont have a usb. I asked chatgpt if its possible to boot gparted live without a usb. they messed up and I ended up stupidly following the method and now I cant boot back to arch at all. When i boot up the laptop it shows grub with the gparted live iso. When I boot to it, it just shows a lot of errors. When I boot arch through bios it just shows the same grub menu. Is there a way to boot back to arch or atleast wipe and reinstall? I really need this laptop in friday and I hope I can get help.
#[SOLVED!] Cant boot back to arch, made a big mistake.

So, it is still impossible for you to get a USB with Arch installation media on?
Thats the problem, I dont have a usb
But is it impossible or just inconvenient for you to get one?
Impossible, im a high schooler and I cant ask my parents for one. If I tell them about this problem im cooked.
So you don't have any friends who have a USB stick you can borrow?
Nopem
How did you get Arch onto your computer if you don't have a USB?
I dual booted using a partition
Okay
Ok, it is going to be a rather long and painful journey then to recover this. But if you have grub running on the system, you can go into the console mode of grub and then manually enter the needed boot records.
Is it where you press C in the grub menu?
Yes
But... I don't know your system and every time I had needed to do this, it took me a lot of attempts to get things right so I don't have enough skills in this matter, to be able to remotely help you with this
Is there perhaps a guide to this?
Not having a liveusb makes this a lot trickier
what do you mean by this?
And the fact I need this laptop in 2 days makes it worse π
Don't think so. I read the manual of grub to figure it out. But... again... it is painful since you don't even know the kernel parameters
Do you have an optical drive? :3
I created a partition, put the iso there, and booted it
Ok, could you do that again? We need to get into some kind of linux to fix this
@mossy nebula Expect to at least spend multiple hours to go through this process...
I know that's probably a bullshit, but
I was on windows that time, note sure if I can do it now since I have nothing to boot into.
doesn't this require root?
The trick here is getting into any sort of linux OS. That's the tricky part
no idea
After that it'll be a 4-5 command job to fix this I reckon
No sadly
I mean, we can enter the kernel and initramfs paths into grub console and then with some luck get into the existing system... But at this point just ask a neighbour or ask the school if they have a USB stick of any size....
Im from a small school and its impossible to ask for a usb unfortunately
Yep, emergency shell hacking (especially over discord) sounds like the 8th level of hell
does gparted boot?
The problem is, the gparted iso does show up in grub. When I boot to it its just a bunch of errors.
what are the errors?
If gparted boots then that's debian in a hat so you might, might maybe maybe be able to work with that
Tell your parents you fucked up and need help here... that is better than any alternative
When I was a teenager I once ran dban against my dad's drive of holiday photos
Believe me, you will be ok
Not sure but it was long lines of something, I did see it mentioning kernels
Plus there's nothing wrong with the machine at all, just the software. This can all be fixed
Also... not having access to any USB stick would be terrible in any recovery situation and I can't believe you run Arch without any way to recover...
My parents have 0 knowledge in tech and will think I broke the laptop and never trust me with one again ππ₯
"i broke the laptop but i can fix it, i just need the usb"
If I get a usb, what do I do after? Ill try my best to ask my brother
"Sorry, in my attempt of getting smarter with computers, I accidentally made a upsiwupsi where I can no longer get into the laptop. I fully understand the problem and how to fix it, but I need a USB stick to fix it"
It needs to be formatted with some kind of Linux media. Could be the Arch installation media or the gparted iso as examples
step 0 - don't listen to AI chatbots, they don't know anything
step 1 - flash the arch iso onto the stick (this will delete EVERYTHING on it)
And how do I somehow flash the iso on it? Doesnt that require another laptop/pc?
it does
After that you're just back a couple steps in the installation guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide#Configure_the_system
Yeah, so you need to ask your brother to also do a few steps on their machine
He does have a laptop, but Im still scared to ask gng π. Will this fix it 100%?
Important thing to realise here is that your arch install is totally safe, nothing has happened to it. Just the booting situation has been broken, which is very simple in comparison
If you have only done the things you showed from ChatGPT, then your Arch install should be safe on your machine and you just need to fix the boot loader
Thats the only major thing I did, the rest was just downloading gparted
Linux is nice like this. It's easy to break, but also very easy to fix
Just gotta put the things it needs where it expects to find them
@mossy nebula You might need to promise your brother some kind of offering like a piece of cake or ice cream depending on your relationship π
I want some too π«΄
Ive been loving arch so I hope to learn more about it, thank you for everyone thats helping me here π―
mushroom.botherer received a thank you cookie!
I will π
julemand can have a cookie too. thanks β€οΈ
julemand101 received a thank you cookie!
I have a good rs with my brother, its just that he wouldnt have expected I would do this, he doesnt even know I use linux π
Do I just do everything listed here from Fstab? What will happen after?
If you follow the installation guide closely then you should end up with a happily installed and bootable system
A few of those steps might already be completed or unnecessary, but it pays to make sure
Does it create another arch install or just lets me boot to my prev install?
it lets you boot
You'll be fixing your current install
it doesn't create anything unless you tell it to
it does whatever you say
in your case, this guide shouldn't be followed step-by-step - because then you obviously would just install another arch onto your computer
Also what usb do I need, just a normal usb thats enough to hold the iso?
normal usb
at least 2 GB
Don't do arch if you need it for production and don't have time or ventoy usb with arch iso.
Arch will break eventually and you'll need ventoy usb
Planning to switch back to fedora in mind cause I realized how complicated it gets. But i'll see how this goes
Don't use chatgpt. It's terrible worst thing for tech support
And how you're supposed to reinstall without USB?
Ill try to ask my brother for one
By using Arch, you agree to DiY and be responsible of your own actions, even breaking it.
Once I boot back to arch and decide to not use it again, I'll need to use the usb to install fedora back right?
This is why you also make system snapshots, thought BTRFS is best for this with snapper
You must share your config, starting with the filesystem type
You need ventoy
Up to you. Fedora may also break too. In the end it's the user the reason systems break
I previously used fedors and ubuntu and they worked fine without any issues, so im planning to go back since Im not experienced enough
Rage quitting arch is not the solution
Just learn that you need to keep your ventoy usb with arch iso in it just in case something happens
But again, it's up to you
The problem is that I have 0 knowledge when it comes to programming and coding. I couldnt do anything without a proper guide. So i think its better to just not use arch for now
I would just backup my hyprland configs, then clean install the system with BTRFS and snapper
Lol, since when arch requires a programming certificate?
I have 0 knowledge when it comes to using the terminal, i sometimes wonder how did I make it this far using arch.
it's kind of related so i get the point
You could then use fedora or linux mint until you learn how to
But for the sake of tux, never use chatbots ever again
Also, you will and must keep a ventoy usb with your distro iso on it to fix your issues
So right now, I need to get a usb, boot back to arch, and install a distro?
chatgpt can provide valid information, but only if you feed it with the same quality of information
You need arch iso to chroot
You can chroot and fix the mess, chroot and copy your configs then reinstall arch, or just straight install another distro
Can you somehow list the things I need to do?
Though it sounds like rage quit, they proved they don't have the skills to manage and maintain Arch
no shit
Yep, i dont think using arch without having a proper usb and 0 terminal knowledge will be a good idea
what about your data?
And I bet OP stole the hyprland configs from a random repo
I just used hyDE π
Nobody prosecuting OP here, as I want them to learn from the mess
Honestly theres nothing much there, but there is some game files in there that I would want to keep
okay. then you can just get the usb prepared with the distro of your choice
no arch
and then just back up the data from there
and install the distro
You will need another drive to backup, and fedora/Linux mint iso to move boot and backup
Unless you want another distro
you won't need another drive to back up
Theres 2 folders there i need, the rest is not important
good, so just get them somewhere safe - persistent usb storage, cloud, a small separate partition or something
once you boot into the installer of the distro of your choice
Afaik, fedora is using BTRFS ootb nowadays
Since I messed up the boot, will it be possible to access the files in the arch once i boot to a new distro?
This is good for this kind of issue but requires user to have knowledge and skills
From a distro that live boots into a desktop
Eg, Linux mint/fedora
yes
I will most likely go back to ubuntu or fedora. I mained ubuntu for months
... ventoy
Ventoy is an easy to use tool for creating a bootable USB drive that can boot several operating systems from 1 USB stick.

This is how I have arch, gparted live ISO, and more tools in 1 USB
So I just need to flash the iso in the usb and boot it? And then just take the folders i need from the arch partition?
yes
Good thing that it's fixable
I saw a lot of people go through the worst breaks ever, not sure why I didnt feel threatened π
Your issues doesn't compare to the ones I've faced, like corrupted drives
So go get a flash drive, ventoy and the distro iso you want to install and use to recover data
Even just seeing arch gone from my grub menu already gave me a heart attack
Yesterday I crashed my gentoo chromebook so hard I had to take the back off and yank the battery
Nah, you're good. I've seen windows deleting my entire esp already

Whats your recommended usb storage size? Planning to install ubuntu
Please don't.
Use fedora kde for the best experience, or nobara if you do gaming
Or even better, bazzite
I used ubuntu for months, ill try maining fedora
I actually tried booting bazzite before, it just gave me errors
Ubuntu is not that good anymore
Ubuntu is a very opinionated distro, not really the best for learning imo
Depends on your specs and how you booted it
Nobara exists as alternative
That is, if you do gaming
I forgot the error, but it kept getting stuck at loading
The system specs and user needs define the distro you'll use
Considering I use an old asus gaming laptop i dont think a gaming based distro will be a good idea π
Share system specs
This will help to recommend a distro and DE
You can try searching it up since im not an expert. The things I know are:
ASUS GL552V
Nvidia GTX 950M
8GB Ram
And also Intel i7 something
Bazzite literally has an Nvidia dedicated ISO
The last time I tried installing it it just got stuck in the loading
For the ram, that depends on the distro
Arch offers zram
But kde plasma will do fine
Try again with ventoy
Ill try tomorrow, ill ask my brother in a bit
Its night rn for me so
You can have bazzite, nobara and Linux mint isos on a single ventoy drive and try them all
Also comes with zswap enabled by default which already helps a lot. But I would guess most Linux distributions does the same today
Idk. But I think OP will benefit best from bazzite than from arch
Because bazzite is noob proof
I never tried mint since I feel like thats pretty much just a lighter windows
You can't break bazzite
Like.. you can't get this thread issue in bazzite due to how it's built
You can try it live
Yeah, can see bazzite enables zram by default
Also my laptop is too old to support the steam game mode thing, so only the dekstop
You don't need big picture mode
Thing is, get bazzite, Nobara and Linux mint isos then try them all.
You can use any of those to recover your data then install
Ive considered bazzite when i used arch, it just shows an error when i tried booting it
Idk how you tried to boot bazzite
But it will boot fine with ventoy
I already mentioned other distros to try
Sorry for dissapearing, I have a lot of assignments to do. Can anyone give a usb recommendation? My brother will ask my mom to buy one
I booted it by making a partition with the iso in it and then boot it from the bios. It sent me to the install menu but when I press it it just shows erros and stuck on loading
I just get the cheapest one from the nearest supermarket, they almost certainly have them on the electronics aisle
So just a cheap 8gb usb will be fine?
Sandisk is a sold brand
Whats a recommended size
Anything lower than 8 you're just sorta scamming yourself paying for the packaging π
Memory is pretty dirt cheap these days
Yeah cause it wont even fit some of the iso's
I never had a usb so i was skeptical when I saw the prices, thats why I asked
Whats the recommended size?
For an iso stick I'd say 16 or 32 gb as then you will never have trouble with space
8gb is a bit small if you ever end up wanting to install windows or something
Thanks
is this one okay? Its common here and a lot of ppl sell it for cheap
thanks, ill buy it and try it out
unless it's somehow a knockoff or somethin
its official from sandisk
then go ahead and buy it
aight
Ordered the usb and it should arrive today. So all I need to do is
- Install Ventoy on the usb
- Put the bazzite ISO and gparted live to the usb
- boot on my laptop
- install bazzite
- Take the folders I need from arch partition
-Wipe out arch and resize with gparted
- yes
1.2 must use GPT mode with ventoy
1.3 disable fast startup on windows if dual booting - yes
2.1 disable secure boot, fast boot and legacy CSM support - no, you use bazzite live desktop to backup your data from arch
3.1 install bazzite while wiping the entire drive - enjoy
optional: enable secure boot for bazzite
https://docs.bazzite.gg/General/Installation_Guide/secure_boot/
Sorry Im still slow, whats the difference between live dekstop and actual install?
live desktop runs from ram. you literally boot a system live, not installed. it's what bazzite does ootb
so when you reboot without installing, bazzite won't be there
So after getting the folders I need, thats where Im supposed to install bazzite?
yup. you boot into bazzite from your ventoy usb, then use eg, dolphin file manager to get into your arch drive and copy your data into another external drive
yes, you need not just the usb flash drive, but another HDD/SSD or upload to a cloud storage
then, you can actually wipe the drive and install bazzite
Its just 2 folders worth barely 3gb, the rest arent important since I keep my data on my phone
still backup
you don't want to be like me, with 700 GiB worth of data, and your main HDD starting to fail, omen of sudden data loss
redundant backups are a must
it's not adviced to store all your data on your main drive, where your OS lives
Also, theres like 150 gb unallocated space in my laptop since i failed to extend my drive, is it possible to install bazzite there and wipe out arch from there?
if the main drive with eg, bazzite fails, you may lose not just bazzite but all your data
Ive heard of that, I had 2 partitions when I used windows
so you better get an external HDD for backups in the future
after the backup, you can use gparted to clean wipe the drive. then, let bazzite use the entire drive and it will do the partitioning for you, unless you still want to dual boot
Im keeping only 1 os since its kind of a hassle to have 2
good thing is that bazzite is like arch, regarding docs. they have great documentation
so pure bazzite
in the future, if you ever need windows, you can make a windows to go external usb SSD/HDD
for that, you can use rufus on a windows VM
Yep
The only time I need windows is for office, so far using just the web version
still it's good to have a windows to go
that's how I managed to upgrade the UEFI of a laptop I was fixing and also get the GPU color profiles and IRS audio
Im gonna get a new laptop when I enter college, thats where I need windows probably
by that time, get an external HDD for backups and one for windows to go
USB 3.2+ HDD/SSD is best for this
that way you can keep your Linux install as main, then just plug the Windows to go, boot, do your thing, power off, unplug, go back to your main Linux
Ill probably just dual boot since I would most likely need windows, but i'll look into that when Im interested
if you dual boot, do it with 2 drives
So i download both of these ISO's?
no, you'e supposed to choose the right iso for your hardware, then your desktop. I recommend KDE plasma
KDE plasma is easier than gnome
also don't use beta isos
Im more used to using gnome, are there any differences other than the look?
So I just download the first iso and boot it through usb after installing ventoy?
Kde plasma is more customizable ootb
If you like gnome, go with it
Yes
I already explained what to do
Thanks, ill update when I get the usb
Luvenshantzen β received a thank you cookie!
Got the usb and im downloading ventoy now
Depends on your host
Idk what OS will you use to make the ventoy usb
I finished downloading
Is this correct?
Do I press test this media & install or just install?
I used my brothers laptop to install ventoy n the iso's. Worked well so far
Don't install bazzite
Stop
You have to use bazzite to get your data
So close the installer
It should have a live desktop
Press quit?
Yes
Idk what boot options it has but look for a live desktop, like test bazzite
Not install bazzite
It had test & install and install
Test and install
It only has
Install bazzite
Test this media & install bazzite
Troubleshooting
So you can open a file manager to get your data
In that case, get a Linux mint iso and boot off it to get your data if bazzite doesn't have a live desktop
It sends me straight to an installer, so I need another iso?
Read what I said
Use the cinnamon one
Alright
Its downloading, ill update when im back on my laptop
The teacher said that if I fix this she'll grade this instead of the work shes supposed to give me
Done downloading, gon boot to it
Which do I choose?
Start linux mint
Start linux mint (compatibility mode)
1st one
it will boot to a desktop
from it, open file manager and open your arch drive
then backup your data
Alright
you can open firefox, and stream on VC
like, open firefox, login to discord, screenshare on VC
Ill send it to gdrive since i dont have an ssd
Rn its just loading I think
Im in the desktop
Got in the file manager, I can open my drive
backup to gdrive then
Aight
Its downloading now, might take like 20 minutes cause my laptop's network driver is old
you mean uploading
Yep π
iirc you gonna single boot bazzite
Yes, Im still keeping mint in the usb just incase
Its still uploading
if you want to use mint for backups, sure
even though it would be nearly impossible for me to break bazzite ill just keep it just incase
after i finish the upload do I go to gparted?
after you finish the backup, reboot to bazzite iso and proceed to install
this is why ventoy is so goated, have several distros/iso tools on 1 flash drive
So I'll wipe the arch install with gparted after that?
bazzite will do it for you
unless you actually want to manually wipe
alright
Installing bazzite now after I have time to do it. Is it just automatic config?
looks good to me
it should erase the entire drive then install bazzite
Its installing now, just waiting
let it do it's thing
once it finishes, it should prompt for a reboot, then enjoy your new system
Alright, thanks for the help so far
Luvenshantzen β received a thank you cookie!
go check #off-topic as there's news for games
Do I continue or no?
I decided to redo the process and do the partitioning myself. Hopefully it works
The error is gone but this popped up like 10 minutes after
I've fixed everything and now my laptop is back to working, thanks for everyone that helped here. Ill mark this as solved.
[SOLVED!] Cant boot back to arch, made a big mistake.
you could had used gparted, wiped the drive, then let bazzite do it's thing
sorry was afk and you never pinged me
My bad, didnt want to disturb anyone. Everything works fine now dw
Thanks for the help
