They probably want to use nvidia-open-dkms then, which tends to be better for newer GPUs
Do they have the kernel headers for their kernel?
That's needed for DKMS to function
Picom will limit your FPS
Im gaming on i3 and about couple months ago I had to get rid of picom, it causes just too much issues when it comes to gaming. You'll loose transparency and get tearing when scrolling fast but gaming should take a massive FPS boost as well as about everything on your destop.

I havent dug deeper than this. Possible that configuring it or switching to another compositor will net better results.
Disabling it to test is worth a try imo.
Simply kill picom, if it doesnt change anything you'll know thats not it in your case. 
For me the difference was night and day
