#[Resolved] Network-Less Install

My schools network has a strict filter, so the keys and other packages are not available for me during install, or they get corrupted or something. Is there any official iso that has all essential packages? It’s fine if I have to work from a tty to install all the other packages, but otherwise is that available?

Posting pictures of the install if someone more knowledgeable than me can identify a workaround.

You could add the cert

viral wagon
#

You can edit the pacman config and add a custom download command which skips ssl, but somehow adding the school cert would be better

#

Does your school add the cert to every machine they deploy so everyone doesn't get errors like this always?

Don’t all schools do that? It’s even worse though that it’s a boarding school and they are blocking all networks except their own in the zip code

#

does this mean that when I go to uni they wont do this? so I will have an easier install in 3 months?

I very much doubt a university will be this strict

#

A lot of schools have filters, but for most it's just blocking adult stuff and some other things they don't want students going on during school

#

At least where I live, it could be different for your area though

Hmm.... How does your phone work then?

#

U have installed the cert?

Do you have any kind of access to public internet from ur school's network?

full kite
#

@rancid gale

rancid gale
#

Torrenting the file has no problem

#

Nah I have no access to public internet

full kite
#

You are contradicting urself....

#

Generally torrenting would require access to public internet

#

So i guess you have access to public internet but probably mitm works on certain ports or protocols

rancid gale
#

@razcrimson

#

Torrenting worked fine with the school internet though? Generally speaking, installing packages works fine but it’s just in the state of the actual install process where it doesn’t work

#

So I’m guessing it’s something about not performing the full handshake that is causing the problem

#

I’ll also be checking with my isp when I have the time

full kite
#

How old is the arch iso?

#

Are we using a resonable new version (few months old atmost) of arch iso for the install?

rancid gale
#

The may one

#

As in, 4 days old

#

Do y’all think I could use a raspberry pi as essentially the internet? Like, the actual downloading of packages would be done by the pi and then they would be transferred over an Ethernet cable?

#

Can you even transfer files computer to computer over Ethernet?

#

Should I maybe be installing an earlier version during the install process and then updating?

#

I tried looking all over the wiki / documentation and I couldn’t even find what would cause the error: unrecognized archive format, so I am not sure if it is even the internet that is the problem

#

It could be the hardware for all I know, with trash values overwritten on the file

full kite
#

If you dont mind using the cellular internet, it might be simple.

#

Does your school provide some kind of wifi?
Was just thinking if we could get some VPN running on the phone and tether that through USB to your machine

I’ll try to install on my pi using my hotspot soon! (Using my pi because if it doesn’t work I don’t want to have to reinstall my os again)

full kite
#

U can try wifi hotspot if this you dont wanna try this

rancid gale
#

I use an iPhone 💀

rancid gale
full kite
rancid gale
#

I dunno it’s looking promising with the pi

full kite
#

Ok I am a bit confused

#

What network is the pi going to connect to?

rancid gale
#

The same one

full kite
#

How r u going to share pi's network to your host machine

rancid gale
#

No idea - Ethernet cable? Anyhow, I think the big problem with the arch install is the fact that I can’t prebuild the file system before actually installing , where with armarchlinux you do

#

At least, that’s my impression

#

I think I’m changing the categorization of this problem into that in my head

full kite
#

If file system is your only issue, you can just flash ventoy on the usb and drop in whatever additional files you like in the USB

rancid gale
#

But, that is dependent on this resolving well

full kite
#

What am I seeing?

rancid gale
#

We shall see if I get to 152/152 without any problems

full kite
#

Is dat pi with archlinuxarm?

full kite
rancid gale
#

Yep, ran pacman -Syu

full kite
#

So this pi is wired up to school network?

#

And here we can download packages without any issues?

#

Weird

rancid gale
#

Yeah it resolved good

full kite
#

If that's the case then maybe we should just try some other mirrors in your install

#

And your school probably has no mitm setup or anything

#

Maybe just some dns or http level blockers/filters

rancid gale
#

No im now running into internet problems

full kite
#

With pi?

#

Same errors?

rancid gale
#

Wait I forgot that it doesn’t have a wifi chip smh

full kite
#

What doesn't have wifi chip?
Host?

#

USB tethering is ur best friend

rancid gale
#

The pi

full kite
#

Ok I am totally confused now

#

How is pi connected to school network?

rancid gale
#

Ethernet

full kite
#

Okay, let's ditch pi for now

#

Can we just try an install with some other mirrors?

#

You can find mirrors to try here

full kite
#

@rancid gale
Any success?

rancid gale
full kite
#

Lol

rancid gale
#

I’m thinking I’ll just use the pi rn and then when I have energy, maybe in a few days, I’ll do the arch install

#

Tysm

Hahaha yeah I forgot that I can’t pay bills this month soooo no cell service for me xd. The student lifestyle goes hard

I was able to talk to the school isp and identified that the problem came from the school’s firewall blocking the mirror link… so yeah it’s solved!
