i run Linux on an external SSD on my laptop, and my laptop has an internal SSD running windows, so i "double boot". When I boot into windows and unplug the SSD while windows is running, the next time I boot and try to select the external SSD it's gone from the boot options in the BIOS, for no reason at all, even reinstalling grub doesn't work. does anyone know why

Install grub with --removable
Windows probably removes the efi entry from nvram

You can chroot and install the bootloader
