#KDE crashes when playing specific Steam game (proton)

I am using proprietary Nvidia drivers.
Whenever I run Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, other applications start glitching out. This includes:

  • Discord becoming unresponsive (yet Voice Channels still work)
  • Discord becoming transparent
  • Steam becoming unresponsive
  • Firefox freezing and, upon restoring down/maximizing, stretching what is already there instead of actually changing the size based on resolution
  • Applications like System Monitor refusing to start
  • Visual artifacts when alt-tabbing between applications
  • eventual crash of the entire DE

What I have tried doing is to:

  • check whether the system is running out of resources by starting System Monitor before the game and seeing the usage (it's not)
  • change the proton version used (doesn't help)
  • try to have less applications run at the same time (usually it's spotify, discord, steam and a page or two of firefox) (doesn't help)

Other games that require more performance (like Overwatch) don't have this issue and I'm honestly kinda lost on what is happening here. This makes the system unusable for anything but the game when it's running (it itself is running perfectly fine with no frame drops whatsoever, until the DE crashes and it closes as a result).

can you switch to Noveau / Nvidia Open-Source
