I want to reinstall windows 11 again, the problem is when i use windows installation media USB it doesnt detect my drive, neither does diskpart.

Im trying to install GParted Live but i cant get it to work, my BIOS doesnt detect it as a bootable usb when i follow the steps at gparted.org

Is there something simple than Gparted Live? i just want to try reformat my drive and convert to gpt

So, u dont use linux but u want to use GParted to partition ur disk to install win 11 right?

patent horizon
#

I have a laptop with arch linux installed and i want to install windows 11 on it

#

sorry, i didnt make that clear. I also have access to a windows 11 PC

#

I tried using both gparted-live-1.6.0-3-i686.iso and gparted-live-1.6.0-3-amd64.iso with UNetbootin none worked

plush crown
#

hmm

#

u can try the archiso

#

its not graphical

#

but it comes with lots of utils for disk partitioning and filesystem creation

#

anyways whats the error u are getting with gparted?

patent horizon
#

seemingly none, it creates all the files but i cant see the usb in my bios to change the boot order

#

but the same usb works with windows installation media so it must be gparted

plush crown
#

is it a legacy bios?

#

or uefi?

patent horizon
#

uefi

plush crown
#

can i see the contents of the usb

#

anyways, if u dont want to troubleshoot this u can just use the arch live iso or other distro live iso

patent horizon
#

ok ill do that

plush crown
#

are u comfortable with linux command line?

patent horizon
#

yes

#

do i need to format first

plush crown
#

so the arch live iso could be great for ur objective, u will be able to check ur disk partition table and its lightweight

plush crown
#

win installer should do that

patent horizon
#

i mean for the arch live iso usb

plush crown
#

u download the iso and flash it to the usb

#

it should work out of the box

patent horizon
#

where can i get the iso?

plush crown
#

u can flash it with dd, cat, cp etc

#

or rufus in windows for example

patent horizon
#

i already have UNetbootin, ill try that, hopefully its not the root of GParted live issue

plush crown
#

im recommending archlinux iso cause its lightweight

#

i think it will be easier to use other live iso than troubleshoot gparted

#

archiso is ~1gb

#

if u need help with partition feel free to ask

patent horizon
#

alright, ill report back when i get the usb done

#

the most painful thing is i only have one usb, so i have to format and hope itll work when i use windows installation media

plush crown
#

so win installer didnt detect ur disk?

patent horizon
#

yes, not even diskpart,

plush crown
#

thats strange

#

even if ur disk table was corrupt

#

it should appear

patent horizon
#

but im running my linux on it so i know its fine.

plush crown
#

yeah, if win refuses to show the disk up u should ask in a windows support forum

patent horizon
#

iv browsed some old forums and none ended conclusively

#

honestly iv just become proficient in breaking drives. I had a usb and after using rufus it no longer works, i dont know if its the cheap USB or something else

shy lily
#

you're trying to install windows right?

patent horizon
#

yes, and its still not detecting my usb i just burnt the iso

#

maybe its UNetbootin ill try rufus

shy lily
#

the windows install media doesn't detect your drive/partition?

patent horizon
#

yes

shy lily
#

does your laptop have proprietary hardware?

#

namely intel stuff

#

like IRST

patent horizon
#

iv heard about needing to install a driver possibly

#

but iv reinstalled windows on this laptop before so i didnt think much of it,

shy lily
#

for the current laptop i'm using, when i wanted to install windows, i needed to copy the appropriate IRST driver into my windows installation media, and then load it in the installer for any partitions to be seen/recognized

shy lily
patent horizon
#

ill try format the drive, if that doesnt work itll be my only option

#

its odd to me how this even happens, gparted and every other linux program can detect the drivers. but not diskpart

shy lily
#

and just to clarify, you don't want a dual boot -- you just want to replace your arch install with windows?

patent horizon
#

yes, replace

#

rufus worked, UNetbootin was the issue ;/ maybe i missunderstood how it works

shy lily
#

eh yeah

#

sometimes different flashing/etching softwares just don't work the same

#

and have random issues

patent horizon
#

i formated the drive to fat32 and gpt, now i have to install the installation media

#

might take a while

patent horizon
#

still nothing. i guess i do need the drivers

plush crown
#

then i suggest u to ask in a windows forum since this is a linux support forum

#

and u have a windows issue

patent horizon
#

ok, thank you for helping me out

plush crown
#

np, good luck solving it

#

... solved
