I use virtual box and i followed a tutorial on arch installation
I installed gnome and then installed i3 with sudo pacman -S i3 from the gnome default terminal
when i log in i dont see an option to select i3. the only options i have there are GNOME and GNOME Classic

I have seen some posts about it online but none have helped
things i have tried:

  • reboot the machine
  • reinstall i3
  • I made sure that i3.desktop exists(it was auto generated when i installed i3)
  • I also tried to play around with i3.desktop to make it more similar to gnome.desktop (i rebooted after every attempt)
  • i have made sure the binaries were installed and exist inside /usr/bin/

I would highly appreciate any help

After a lot of playing around i managed to make it work

For others who have the same problem:
i tried to install another dm so i disabled gdm but then i tried to switch it back to gdm and then it worked

so all you need to do is to disable/stop gdm and then reenable it

EDIT: you will also need to temporarily switch your dm with another one and then bring back gdm
