hi, im a 15 year old boy who owns a decent laptop, a lenovo legion, amd reyzen 7, 12 gb ram, rtx 3050. i have been using windows for almost 4 years now and im starting to hate it, it has tons of bloatware and is really restricted and there is almost no customization, i have been into programming for the part 3 years too, so i have a good knowledge in tech, and i choose arch for its customization and for the control i gain over my device, but im unsure about switching to gnu/linux because of its limited gaming experience, i usuallly play some of the need for speed games, far cry, gta v, and i am willing to give up games protected by kernel anticheat like fortnite or apex. i have found that there is no way to game on linux, but im unsure if that has changed or not, and i was unable to find the latest information on the web, so im here seeking help weather i should switch to gnu/linux or stick to windows 10, and if there's a way to game on arch

You can install games with Lutris and WINE (or, if Steam, use Proton). Yes, ofc there is performance penalty, but u can play
well, GTA V certainly works
can confirm older NFS games, UG2 through Carbon, were tested and confirmed to work by me personally
I play Doom 2016 and Metal: Hellsinger a bit, both are installed on WINE. And i get good performance compared to windows (and a bit of artifacts while game is starting)
theres also this cool website called ProtonDB that might get you some tips
ok, how do i know what games can be played and what cant?
So, welcome to the light side brother! We hope u will enjoy it
i will take a look
i have heard of proton and wine, though i dont know the difference, and what they are, are they a virtual machine?
WINE - Wine Is Not an Emulator
they are a program that almost magically turns windows kernel calls into linux kernel calls
WINE just replaces windows syscalls with linux syscalls, also turns DirectX into OpenGL/Vulkan API calls
(thats why it has good performance)
like a translator, but instead of translating Russian texts into English, it translates windows apps into linux apps
i get it now
i already have the games files downloaded on my windows, do i need to redownload them to work on arch or no?
most of the time, no
No, you can just move them into WINE installation iirc
some games might store data in the registry, but most of the time you can just copy them over
that's what i did with all three of my NFS games anyway
But dont forget to install VC++ and DirectX to WINE
great, what about connecting controllers? i use DS4 for windows, does it change for arch?
controller support is actually perfectly fine
im playing gta 5 right now with an xbox controller
is there a youtube tutorial or a blog that shows how to run games using wine?
what about dualshock controllers?
Lutris is pretty easy
its really quite simple: install wine and run the game
my other controller thinks its a dualshock and it did work
(but i had to fuck with lutris to get everything to work in global wine prefix)
you might need to want to install xpad-dkms-git from AUR if you want to use the xbox controller, while dualshock support is built in
cool
what web browsers do you use? i use opera gx, while im aware of it being a spy but it has good features that i cannot give up, and still didnt find a replacement
Firefox nightly
... solved
