You should launch the WM with .xinitrc, not .xprofile.

Hyprland doesn't run without xorg so calling it when xorg is not running makes nothing happen

Then you need to change your .xprofile to call "startx" at the end which is a script that will launch xinit

Which in turn reads the .xinitrc

Investigate why it's not getting sourced. Are you using a login program from the compatibility section on the xprofile wiki page?

If you're trying to launch with Bash then simply renaming it to .profile might do the trick

Bash is not an x client, it doesn't source .xprofile

SDDM looks like a good option to me. Because it requires configuration that I enjoy
