Hello guys, i use arch and now every game i play the cpu shows 90+ degrees celcius, even tho the utilization is 20 percent or less. I am on a laptop. I use feral game mode on every game. The cpu governer is set to powersave and power mode is set to balanced. Also the fans also become super loud.
#extremely high cpu temps while playing any game.

Tried setting everything to powersave, and lowered cpu freq
You could try this:
https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/thermald/
(Assuming you have an Intel CPU)
Perhaps even this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Microcode
Thanks ill try
bachbarque received a thank you cookie!
I don't know if the thermald package will work on AMD CPUs, but you should definitely download the amd-ucode package
I do have the amd ucode package
Btw the thing is
Whenever i click play the cpu IMMEDIATELY goes to 70 degrees
like in the span of 2 seconds
50 degrees to 70 degrees in 2 fucking seconds
and then while playing its 80-90 degrees
How old is the laptop?
Other than what I've suggested in terms of software, all I can think of would be to check if a BIOS setting is inhibiting the fans at all - or to disassemble the computer and reapply thermal paste to the CPU (if that's at all possible)
Bought in 2022 dec
It seems like an os issue to me idk
Out of curiosity, what happens to the temperature if you change from 'powersave' to a normal or higher setting?
I use balanced
Powersave makes no difference
I mean regarding the CPU governer as you mentioned
As i said gamemode sets the governer to performance it that does make it stable 90+ deg
Setting it to power save atleast made it like 80-90
it flutuates between 80-91-92
With powersave
Ill get it cleaned tbh
Where did you say that?
Sorry english isnt my first language but gamemode does make the governer to performance
Right
Its generally cooler with gamemode disabled
Ive noticed that
Yeah because i use a laptop stand
So its exposed to air and not blocked in anyway
I mean internally
👍🏻
Maybe theres like dust in the fans
Nooo :( i forgot to renew it
It expired 2023
december
Ah
I can get it cleaned by a local repair shop i guess
But idk how they would test it since theyre all familiar to windows

Do you think you could try doing it yourself?
There should be some videos on YouTube about your specific model
Ill just tell them to clean it
Then ill test myself afterwards
I recently restored my old Alienware by watching a few videos
I checked some benchmark vids on yt they all show 90 degrees or so for every game
For my cpu and gpu
But my cpu usage is 20% thats my concern
It shouldnt get 95 degrees on 20%
Thanks for your help anyways

Ill get it cleaned from a local shop
Do your fans ramp up?
They should
Also please give me the CPU model
Install the package turbostat
Run sudo turbostat --Summary --quiet --interval 1 --show PkgWatt
And then give me the numbers displayed when launching a game
Oh yes this was said in the original post
Yes
Will do
Without running game
While running game
@lilac mason
Oops my wifi is too bad to load images
Please paste some numbers here
Sending messages seems to work
Ah no now it loaded
Yeah that's about what I expected, 20w isn't anything surprising for a laptop running a game
What's your CPU?
Ryzen 7 5800h
In my 10 min gaming ses max was 96 degrees with about average 20 % cpu usage and game mode disabled.
Powersave governer and balanced power profile
45W TDP
20 during gaming sounds good
Your cooling might be insufficient
Ill get my fans cleaned
And get it cleaned from the inside
I do use a laptop stand however should allow for good cooling
You said you'd go to a repair shop
But if you don't feel uncomfortable, you could remove the back (about 10 screws) and use some compressed air to clean the vents
Nah sorry i feel uncomfortable
I dont wanna mess up this laptop
Its only been a year
Ryzen 7 5800h
Cezanne mobile processor. Its power management table can probably be adjusted with RyzenAdj.
Yes, RyzenAdj works for these CPUs but there's still a problem if it overheats at 20w
My 15w CPU seems to have about 40w of thermal headroom and 30 sustained
Tested with a max of 50W using RyzenAdj
Ive never used this tool
How do i use it
git clone https://github.com/FlyGoat/RyzenAdj.git
Then ./ryzenadj with any flags and options lited on the GitHub page that you need
Can u tell me some options that may help with my issue
I have never used this
You need to set max power, max power sustained and max power continuous
Easy as the options are shortened to -a - b -c
First I recommend reading the currently in place values
Then you can try things such as 20000 for each (20w)
Can i try undervolting from corectl
I'm not sure your CPU supports under/overvolting but you can try -0.025 volt steps
If vcore changes and your CPU is stable you're all good
Idk bro
Ill just get it cleaned firsy
