GDM freezes on log in, shows the gray screen (inconsistent behavior)

So my GDM turns gray and the username and password field and everything disappear like normal but then it freezes on the gray screen right before starting gnome-shell. It's not consistent but happens very often and i just have to force restart a lotta times. Does anyone know a fix to this?
