the standard way of doing it is to install xss-lock which handles locking the device when going to sleep/hibernation
in your i3 config you can just put it to autostart xss-lock i3lock

sooo, how do I lock it? I ran i3lock before i did this config stuff, and i got stuck in an unusable state, so i had to reset the power. Is the same going to happen again? (I don't want to restart this pc right now)

is just a circle and you type letters and it flashes on the outside

you can customize it to have an image tho, or change the colors
