Hi guys, I've recently noticed a really weird thing that happens sometimes with my gaming pc. I'm not even sure if this is an issue with Linux, but I'm really not sure what else could cause it so I'm just gonna put it in here and hope for the best.

So I recently started playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on my Arch PC through Proton GE 8-4, and the whole thing would freeze every hour or two. I have a system monitor on my other screen and it shows that the CPU and RAM are at about 70% use while the GPU is at 99%. The CPU usage increases quite a bit when it freezes, but the GPU stays as it is before. I am also currently playing Amnesia Rebirth, and noticed this same issue.

When I say freeze, I mean the entire system will lock up. The screen freezes, and the audio will play for another 30 seconds or so before it glitches out and stops. Using keys like num-lock are also completely unresponsive, the light on my keyboard doesn't even change.

Once this happens, to my knowledge the only thing I can do is restart my PC through the button on the case. This is where the issue really gets weird though, since after the PC restarts, it does not detect my wifi adaptor. The adaptor is a tp-link archer model, I forget exactly what model it is. The thing I find confusing is what fixes it though. If I turn the PC off and on again, the adaptor still is not registered, but if I open up the case and so much as poke the wifi adaptor it starts working again.

I am dead certain the wifi adaptor is mounted properly to the motherboard and if the pc restarts normally it works perfectly, its only when it restarts after crashing that this issue occurs.

Does anyone have any idea what causes this or how I can fix it? This whole issue has stumped me since the effect and the fixes just seem to weird compared to what actually causes it

Heres a few more hardware and software details:

KDE plasma version: 5.27.6
Kernel: 6.3.9-arch1-1 64-bit
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
Memory: 16gb ddr4
GPU: Rx6700xt

please ask if I have left out anything important and thanks in advance for any help

just try the LTS kernel. That usually works for hard freezes like that.
Try the Magic Sysrq sequence in case it happens

I have tried multiple different kernels including the lts one before so I don't think that is the issue.

I'll try the sysrq sequences next time it happens, thanks for that suggestion. Now I just need to play for an hour or so

of all the consistent issues I have ever experienced, this one has got to be the most painful to test :/
