[SOLVED] unable to login even after changing password

hey there, for a strange reason, I cannot login into an endeavourOS system, even having the right credentials and changing the password from the root account. root login and password work fine, but the regular user doesn't. for a reason the system rejects every password I type, even if I used passwd to change it from the root account.

note that it was working fine before, but after updating, it stopped working.
any ideas on how to fix this?

I don't want to reinstall everything just to fix the login incorrect

Does this happen if you try logging in from a TTY?

it happens on lightdm and TTY with the regular user

but root can login fine

the system uses lightdm and cinnamon as desktop

I tried login as root, run passwd and resetting it, yet it still says login incorrect

when checking the user name to verify that I'm typing it right, it is correct. same with the password

I even tried setting a simple password like "home" and it still rejects it

ofc that was to try to login no matter how then reset the password

should I chroot to attempt to clear/reset the password?

I could try to clean install and move it to pure arch, but I don't want/don't have the time to setup it

so that's why I want to fix the issue

Can you maybe provide the pacman log from the update / a journal.

mind sharing the command? rn chrooted into the system, and just changed the user password, will reboot to try to login. also this perhaps was due to pacnew files merging

and yes it could be because you need to merge pacnew files

which is why I'd like to see the pacman log

I'm running out of ideas tbh and highly considering backing up and clean installing endeavourOS on that laptop

I'm even considering moving it to mint + distroboxed arch or just arch

forget about mint, it doesn't even detect the wifi

hope you guys have some ideas before using the nuke button

one of the reasons that I may need to reinstall is because the endeavouros-mirrorlist seems to had gone corrupted

and when wanting to upgrade with pacman, it fails to get .db file

so a lot of things broke

You might have an unmerged /etc/shells.pacnew

as I'm seeing in the pacman log

Try reinstalling the zsh shell

so reinstall it

btw, I was able to fix mirrorlist on pacman.conf and it updates fine now. now gotta do the other thing

with endeavor instead of endeavour :p

now the thing is being able to login

Reinstall zsh

as you can see, the mirrors now update fine. and zsh was included now @vocal hedge

changed the password from chroot to what it was, rebooting now
