to have a slowmode forever on linux. and use threads as the main discussion spaces.
Problems this could solve:
- multiple threads of different topics happening alongside, total confusion.
- casual talks on linux mingling with people actually wanting to discuss/learn linux stuff.
- advanced/serious linux questions getting buried because the people currently in the chat are talking about something else. and because people who are interested in those questions are less frequent than usual casual talkers.
- the 3 second slowmode being too slow for hyper individuals and fast moving chats, and anything faster leading to spam/rukus.
How we go about it:
0. We have a ~10second slowmode on linux and a shorter one on threads...
- We send a message on linux when we want to discuss thing x,
- people join that thread when they want to discuss it too.
Result:
1 & 2. Solved inherently.
3. More discussable and advanced topics(which get buried) are viewable in the chat history without compromising on the in depth discussion that could happen in threads.
4. we can discuss stuff at any frequency comfortable to us as we want in threads. being slow in chat doesn't mean that you miss out on the conversation as it moves along. being fast doesn't involve pressing the enter button and watching the discord UI shake for 3+ seconds before you can send a message.
bonus:
5. I can quickly skim thru the chat to see if there's something that piques my interest. rather than scrolling thru lemons(contextual) to find the last serious message. 💀 🍋
