to have a slowmode forever on linux. and use threads as the main discussion spaces.

Problems this could solve:

  1. multiple threads of different topics happening alongside, total confusion.
  2. casual talks on linux mingling with people actually wanting to discuss/learn linux stuff.
  3. advanced/serious linux questions getting buried because the people currently in the chat are talking about something else. and because people who are interested in those questions are less frequent than usual casual talkers.
  4. the 3 second slowmode being too slow for hyper individuals and fast moving chats, and anything faster leading to spam/rukus.

How we go about it:
0. We have a ~10second slowmode on linux and a shorter one on threads...

  1. We send a message on linux when we want to discuss thing x,
  2. people join that thread when they want to discuss it too.

Result:
1 & 2. Solved inherently.
3. More discussable and advanced topics(which get buried) are viewable in the chat history without compromising on the in depth discussion that could happen in threads.
4. we can discuss stuff at any frequency comfortable to us as we want in threads. being slow in chat doesn't mean that you miss out on the conversation as it moves along. being fast doesn't involve pressing the enter button and watching the discord UI shake for 3+ seconds before you can send a message.
bonus:
5. I can quickly skim thru the chat to see if there's something that piques my interest. rather than scrolling thru lemons(contextual) to find the last serious message. 💀 🍋

showcase:
we're talking about lemons, dockers/containers, EFI, discord-js, macos
and it's just so heavy on the brain to filter thru messages to find the one you're looking for

#

I missed, vulkans and opengl.

#

and stuff like DE-1 vs DE-2 vs WMs is just going on forever.

threads exist and you can use them

#

and having 10 second slow mode is way too much, we already have 3 sec

Usually I use replies to explicitly assign what conversation I mean when talking in a chaotic chat.

#

But I agree with the sentiment.

Just create a thread and tell the other that it's created and to move the topic to there

not even gonna bother reading your proposal, but i'm accepting it. #tech-general will now have 6 hour slowmode and thread will be disabled. idk why you want that but i'll provide

As we already have threads as an option I’m not really sure what upping slow mode will achieve

It would force more people onto threads per annoyance I guess.

This seems interesting.
Sometimes I post a question, and it gets lost in the current off-topicey chat environment...

Might be helpful in discovering such questions too.

#

Or making two channels linux, linux (advanced?) might work too.

Maybe leaving the current channel untouched,
And Adding another channel "linux-threads" would help.
also helping to solve the advanced Linux discussion channel requests I think I remember being posted here in server meta

To me it sounds a lot like a suggestion for a general discussion forum channel

Hmm maybe. The benefit I see for non forum threads is better initial message visibility and a bit of legroom for chat discussion too.
Forum becomes very formal I think

I think it gives a difference of mood for lack of a better word.
Chat feels very ephemeral (except it isn't), categorising everything into topics with titles and tags makes them indexed and easily accessible, which give a sort of permanence.

#

That's not bad per se, it's the difference between forums and chatting and also why actual Forums are not a serious Discord replacement

#

Chat conversations aren't indexed or at least they used not to be until Discord jumped on the AI hype to burn money for no reason and added Summaries which somewhat index conversations but really shouldn't be used https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/12926016807575-Summaries-AI

I think Threads are still good if there's a specific topic people want to talk about in a forum-like manner, say there's some news like LTT's deconstruction that happened recently. The conversation would be isolated to just that, which (ideally) keeps it on topic.

The problem I have with threads in a fast moving chat is I and others can't discover and browse them easily.
And yeah for advanced/specific discussions a feeling of "slowness"(as compared to garbage spam) and maturely moving chats and permanency would be nice

On mobile, long press a channel and click the "threads" button in the context menu

#

On desktop, click the arrow beside the server name and select "active threads"

It has about a 30 character limit vs a large initial message viewing and scrolling

#

And I don't think everyone knows that so it'll be hard to adopt
