if so, for me i inserted this into my config:
exec_always diodon
so that its always turned on
i am not sure what i3 is in this case but i know how to start things with xinitrc

In Linux (at least on X11), copy-paste is slightly different.
Nothing is actually copied until you paste it. Only the "selection" is kept in memory, as a reference.
So, without some clipboard manager tool adding such storage functionality, if you close the program, there is no longer a selection, so you cannot paste.
