I compiled the above above dotfile and my screen went black. I have some back ups on an external drive that is a tarball xz. I also have an image that is more recent I would like to roll back to if possible. My distro is Arch linux I use btrfs this is my subvolume layout.

thank you.

slow beacon
#

Maybe try

#

Uncompiling the dotfiles?

paper seal
#

:[

sly pagoda
#

compiling dotfiles 💀

#

Spoiler alert: things were NOT GOOD

paper seal
#

this is the last time i try and get hyperland working lol

slow beacon
#

Uhh try undoing anything in that x11 folder

paper seal
#

that was*

slow beacon
paper seal
slow beacon
#

Those configs aren't compatible with your display

paper seal
#

💀

slow beacon
#

So try undoing that

paper seal
#

oh

#

okay

slow beacon
#

Specifically the i915 one

#

And uhh prolly modesetting

paper seal
#

yeah Im gonna mount my stuff and try deleting that

paper seal
#

I tried looking in the .conf folder

slow beacon
#

Probably

paper seal
slow beacon
#

Probably?

#

Try looking at that install script to see where it's actually located

paper seal
#

ah good idea

slow beacon
#

yeah try looking there

paper seal
#

aight

#

wait

#

wouldn't I have to nano into that file?

#

there is nothing there

#

nvm lol

#

its under ../

#

🤔

#

i'm an idiot

#

💀

paper seal
#

it looks like there is special way to access xorg

#

TIL

slow beacon
#

Wut

#

Is there a config file under xorg.conf.d or not?

paper seal
#

ls -a yields . ..

slow beacon
#

Try catting the i915.conf

paper seal
#

cat i915.conf/ from home directory im guessing?

#

mmh no such file or directory

paper seal
slow beacon
#

In /etc/modprobe

#

Read that install script man

#

Why are you catting something that's not in your homedir

slow beacon
paper seal
#

my /var/log isnt mounted actually i should probably mount that subvolume 💀

slow beacon
#

Yeah now try catting i915.conf

#

And not from the home dir

paper seal
#

I must be missing some basic shit here

slow beacon
#

Do you use a display manager

paper seal
#

i only use x11 and kde

slow beacon
#

Yeah and do you install a display manager

#

Well I guess yes

#

Try looking at the display manager's logs

#

When it fails to start

paper seal
#

wait i use wayland

#

so xdg

slow beacon
slow beacon
paper seal
#

i am stupid? 💀

slow beacon
#

What did you thought xdg was?

paper seal
#

you know what idk man(not assuming your gender) I'm just guessing till something sticks

slow beacon
#

haish

#

Bro just install sddm and get on with it

paper seal
slow beacon
#

Don't sync your mirror for a single package

#

It'll break your system

paper seal
#

aight

modern bone
#

-Syu or just -S

#

never -Sy

slow beacon
#

Also why're you in the live iso

paper seal
#

because the screen goes black when i boot and i cant only see my mouse

modern bone
#

also ctrl alt f2 usually works

slow beacon
slow beacon
modern bone
#

you could also just disable sddm to make it go to tty

paper seal
#

if you guys shoot me some documentation that helps as well

#

I'm a DB guy not a super user

slow beacon
modern bone
paper seal
#

ah okay

modern bone
#

like once the computer launched arch

paper seal
#

my bad

#

got it

slow beacon
paper seal
modern bone
#

it actually works any time after youve booted

paper seal
#

oh i got it

#

my login came up

slow beacon
#

Now look at your display manager's logs

paper seal
modern bone
#

what the

#

why are you in zsh-newuser-install

paper seal
#

No fucking idea I’ve never seen this in my life

modern bone
paper seal
#

This is the main menu

modern bone
#

just do that last one

#

q

#

rn we're trying to fix the gui

#

you can config zsh later

paper seal
#

Okay 👍

modern bone
#

yea so thats basically just bash

#

anyway um

#

you were gonna get sddm right

#

so um

#

sudo pacman -S sddm

#

systemctl enable sddm

#

sddm-greeter

#

that should fix your problem

#

oh wait wait

#

actually it might not

#

one sec

#

@paper seal whats the output of file /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service

#

this is just checking what program you use for login

#

since its not working we can just disable it

#

imma just put out the steps here

paper seal
modern bone
#

oh

#

um

paper seal
#

my Ethernet cable just failed 😢

modern bone
#

you sure its the cable?

paper seal
#

well im talking you still if you think its the access point

#

my desktop is attached to

#

imma just grab a different cable

modern bone
#

ok

paper seal
modern bone
slow beacon
#

type ip address

#

If you have an ip on the enp0s1 interface, that means you're connected

modern bone
#

same thing

slow beacon
#

yeah I just don't wanna confuse him

modern bone
paper seal
slow beacon
#

Okay you don't have internet

#

Uhh try connecting to the wifi

modern bone
#

what

modern bone
slow beacon
#

Oh yeah mb

#

Didn't see that lol

#

What's that virbr0 interface though

modern bone
#

@paper seal can you try pinging fsf.org

slow beacon
modern bone
modern bone
slow beacon
paper seal
modern bone
slow beacon
#

Bro are you in a vm

modern bone
#

dns issue likely

paper seal
slow beacon
#

This is weird

modern bone
#

well i dont wanna figure that out

#

but anyway

paper seal
#

Let me move to a different access point hang on

modern bone
#

sudo pacman -Rns sddm && sudo pacman -S sddm may work

paper seal
slow beacon
#

Force it

paper seal
#

How

slow beacon
#

-f

#

I think

#

I don't use pacman

modern bone
paper seal
#

Looks like it worked

slow beacon
#

Now start it

modern bone
#

removing sddm? sure

modern bone
modern bone
#

btw what i sent is steps for once you have internet

slow beacon
modern bone
#

idk about if you dont

paper seal
#

Fuck

#

Lol

#

Welp

modern bone
#

fix your internet (again, prolly dns issue) then sudo pacman -S sddm && sudo systemctl start sddm && sddm-greeter will probably work

paper seal
#

Okay 👍

#

Im gonna work on the internet issues

modern bone
#

ok

paper seal
modern bone
#

i think it might

#

not will

#

its probably the first thing id try though

#

apart from reading errors which i dont wanna bother with

#

btw you should test that internet works on iso

#

if so then maybe youre missing some packages and should pacman -Syu base in a chroot

paper seal
#

Look like it works

modern bone
paper seal
#

K

modern bone
#

it might be missing something anyway

#

imma go in 5 min

paper seal
modern bone
paper seal
modern bone
#

ok

paper seal
torpid furnaceBOT
#

you just got $\\LaTeX$'d received a thank you cookie!

modern bone
#

ok

#

well good luck to you

paper seal
#

@slow beacon it did not work lol screen is still black 💀

slow beacon
#

Damn

paper seal
#

Yeah

paper seal

The current time for bored amogi is 06:24 PM (CDT) on Mon, 01/05/2023.

modern bone
#

that means it was 8:35 am when you sent that

#

i go to school

paper seal
#

Oh sorry

modern bone
#

just letting you know

paper seal
#

I only have time in the morning and at night i work lol

modern bone
#

@paper seal wait why not just reinstall sddm

paper seal
modern bone
#

like i said you should be able to pacman -S sddm then systemctl enable sddm then sddm-greeter

#

iirc i said that

paper seal
#

Would it be the same thing?

modern bone
paper seal
#

Isnt it the same command as you just wrote down?

#

Basically a reinstall

modern bone
modern bone
#

oh yeah

#

one sec

#

what exactly happened though

paper seal
#

But basically it was still broke

paper seal
#

And screen was still black after restarting

modern bone
#

ok then

#

let me see

#

@paper seal do you have an nvidia graphics card

paper seal
#

The chip set in my laptop is amd

modern bone
#

oh

#

do you have the linux-firmware package installed & up to date

paper seal
modern bone
#

ok this sounds like a driver issue

#

also i need to know what your gpu is if it doesnt work

#

so you would get into terminal (iso or not, doesnt matter) and run lspci -k |egrep -i "vga|3d"

paper seal
#

Gpu is on the left hand sides

modern bone
paper seal
modern bone
#

oh

paper seal
#

Amd ati 3:00 lucienne

modern bone
#

ok then lsmod |grep amdgpu after booting in the thing

paper seal
#

Will do it in an hour lol

paper seal
paper seal
#

@modern bone

#

Guess i need to install some stuff lol

modern bone
#

@paper seal at this point its prolly a waste of time not to switch

#

.aw gdm

exotic violetBOT
modern bone
#

try that

modern bone
#

if you really wanna check that it's broken, try sddm-greeter --test-mode

#

gtg

paper seal
#

i'll give it a try

#

you came back just in time lol

paper seal
#

You know what I think im just gonna do a role back. I have an m.2 i was previously using, i can just role back using that

modern bone
#

ok
