Arch wiki has you covered, including BIOS mode: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide
also mbr file system
Yep, that's in there
yeah then probably arch isn't really for you tbh
Installing Arch onto a system the "standard" way is a rather complicated process. It gets a lot easier if you understand the steps being taken and why, but it's difficult if you don't. Arch expects you to have a decent understanding of what you're doing at all times, and if you don't, to do the work to learn.
If you aren't ready to dig into how it works just yet, another, easier distro is probably better suited for you. Personally I've heard very good things about Fedora.
You can use the archinstall script that'll walk you through the process, but I'm not sure if it works well with BIOS/MBR setups or not.
I'd find it weird if a new user wasn't at least somewhat confused by the install guide
true
My main problem with the install guide is a lack of explanation for how to actually partition the drive
The gentoo install guide, by comparison, is far more descriptive in such steps
@dense glade you might wanna try installing arch in a vm with the install guide or someones help just to get used to it
oh yea that's a huge thing. I totally agree
honestly everyone says the install guide assumes you know a lot of stuff but I don't think that's actually true. all of the install guide gives you the commands and details what to do in a way i believe most non-linux could understand
the only part it doesn't do that for is partitioning
most vms are bios by default btw
yeah i guess so
i dont know though bc its hard to see from my point of view
kinda wish the install guide would mention cfdisk tho. fdisk is just 🤢
gentoo handbook explains partitioning wonderfully
cfdisk is a subset of fdisk
cause like
it means fdisk the editor not the command
cfdisk is technically fdisk
it also means the command. it's the example command for the section
i might be wrong
the link mentions fdisk the editor
which includes the fdisk command and cfdisk command
99% of people aren't gonna click on the link to the fdisk page and read the thing that says cfdisk exists imo
yeah but thats kind of on them technically
i dunno it sounds redundant
maybe the example should say cfdisk
also the wiki page doesnt mention cfdisk afaik
.aw fdisk
it does in a coloured box
yeah
fdisk was really scary to me when i was first installing arch. i think mentioning cfdisk would be a huge improvement
agreed
vegancookies thinks cfdisk is the antichrist because it only accepts ‘yes’ for write confirmation
and not y
lmao absolutely
‘sacrifice’
also its just faster and less work for your brain
because you see what it looks like in an intuitive way at all times
otherwise youd have to memorize everything to get the same speed and safety
anyway
ig also you dont press enter
ig the arch wiki is a wiki
we can always edit it
fair
Ofc it's a terminal. That's how vanilla arch works
Wiki has everything you need to know to get arch running
i think my main prob is that i got partitioning issues
ok
Archinstall script is broken
🙁☹️
i dont really get it but what if i just replace it with my windows 10?
thinking bout that
i dont really know if i should do that
maybe i shouldnt
im not really left with any other choice
dualbooting isn't that hard
then help ig?
im on mbr file system with legacy bios
its not letting me make partitions during installation
what are you using to partition and what's not working?
yea i neeed to go through the installation again to remember that
lemme just do it rq
@wintry panther
MBR only allows 4 partitions by default
you only need one linux partition for BIOS
how big is sda4?
and is that your linux partition?
what's sda4 for?
can you show the rest of cfdisk?
that's a weird partition scheme...
I know
okay so uh what's next?
well I'm confused about why windows made three partitions that big
how else is it supposed to be?
well typically it's a 500m, most of the disk, then a partition that's about 1 gb
so what can we do about that?
...
Too few arguments for command note!
Usage: .note <name>
is sda4 being used for anything
empty
you could try deleting that and hope it doesn't break anything
I'm just gonna gpt and uefi first ig
based
okay so uh what gpu am i suppose to choose here?
well, what GPU do you have?
