With Frostpunk 2 on the horizon, what advice would you give someone playing Frostpunk 1 (in preparation for the sequel) for the first time?

If you're starting completely new: Since it's your first time playing and you know none of the game mechanics. Just take it slowly, Frostpunk is a game of planning and resource management, so just explore all the mechanics first. Although at first it may seem slightly complicated, it gets easier as you learn more. (Oh, and play on easy first)
If you've played it once and still have no idea what's going on: So you've played it once and you still don't understand anything, that's fine. I was also very lost on my first 2 or 3 playthroughs. For game mechanics, there's adaptation laws, technology research, scouting, hope & discontent. Each mechanic has it's own effect on the overall game. To better understand these mechanics, you should look at the tutorial that explains all of them in more detail.
If you've played it more than 3 times and still have no idea what's going on: At this point, if you still don't know anything about the game, you should look online for tutorial videos. They explain the game in more detail than I could in this forum post.

If you like challenges and hard games, make sure you play on easy mode

Don't feel bad about playing on easy either, games are about having fun, and if you have fun on easy levels and not on hard, then thats fine
