Yeah, I find 7-Castle a bit harder than 8-Tower 2, in 8-Tower 2 you just have to optimize your powerups very well and defeat Bowser Jr. fast, in 7-Castle there's a part where you have to hit a block just in time, which makes it a bit stressing

But then the controller sees that the chaser despawns, and spawns a new one
which im assuming respawns a flagpole cus u cant beat the game while in spooky mode or smt

- Refactoring majority of the code into the chaser instead of the controller causes everything to basically stop working
- Refactoring the controller to manage 2 chasers

i think all i can think of is maybe add more ways to both get rid of spooky mode and grant spooky mode (not sure if you already had that planned)
and maybe if you get killed by the ordinary m/l then pass the spooky mode to the other player instead of still having it since it can be a bit wonky lol

i feel sometimes is random or smt
like sometimes it takes some time for the other player get the spooky mode
meanwhile for the other it just takes like seconds
If you are in the lead, the spooky mode timer is cut in half to keep you on your toes
(If the game is even, it's RNG)

While completely toying around with this game, I somehow manage to stumble into this behavior when you complete a level using the mega mushroom
I guess this is why the item itself is a bigger liability

I did it a lot for testing. The timing to pop the mega so you transform instead of clearing spooky mode is really tight but is just barely possible
just a question: how does the grayscale effect thing work? is it a duplicate of every single palette, or is it some code that manipulates the colors?
The code makes a backup of the current palette, then goes through each color and uses a formula for making each color grayscale
for 1ups reducing lives, does this mean 1up mushrooms basically become poison mushrooms/negative mushrooms now? interesting

hi, i just started playing this hack today and it's really fun, really makes me rethink how i play mario lol. but i encountered some very big bugs:
- if the ordinary mode starts on the same frame (i think) i touch the flag pole, the static just stays there and the game is softlocked
- there's no bottom cap for the lives so if you have 0 or -1 lives, the game crashes when you go to the map (either beating a level, dying, or 1-up house). if you get to -2 lives the game crashes the moment you touch the 1up mushroom.
- in 1up houses, ordinary mode starts before you're able to do anything and hitting the blocks doesn't disable it. so, because of #2, if you enter the 1-up house you've gotta be lucky to not have to restart the game (since you're pretty unlikely to have many lives)
- Huh, didn’t know of that one. That would be hard to fix
- Known issue. Fix will be made soon

Working on the phase 1 attack. Utilizing a zone for this fight. Surprisingly useful to have a square defined around the arena the player will be in
Translation: Ndy got tired of fooling with an Active Collider and just reverted to good ol zone math :p

Probably still use zone math for most stuff, but just using the collider so when the attack bounces off of a wall for example, it will actually stop at the wall

Is an ActiveCollider a subset of a normal Collider?
I think the difference is that an active one detects collisions purely in terms of “actor overlap”, while a normal collider is tilemap
active colliders detect active colliders and colliders detect when smth collides with a side
usauly a point sensor or line sensor
then point sensor/line sensors detect tile collision as well as platfrom collision
and collider colision
all I can say is if you want more info kust turn on the collision viewer with the lua script and see fir yourself

tbh scary soundtrack might give this whole hack a even more creepy vibe 😭 orignal nsmb music feels off a bit for this kind of stuff but maybe im brainwashed with sonic.exe and mario.exe type of shits with earrape music and dead characters

Got to play MvsL for this mod on actual DS and got some really good feedback
Some things I’ll be updating:
- The player with the chaser (while in spooky mode) will be given a slight speed boost to help close the gap (the speed difference will be a little more than how much faster a normal player is than a player with a blue shell is)
- Dying to the chaser will change the chaser’s target to the other player (helps to prevent stalling from being the ideal strat)
Oh and if I can figure out how to do it, the player who won the previous match will be the one who starts with the chaser (instead of it being random each game)
Minor QoL as well: there will be a visual indicator of who currently has the chaser over the player while not in spooky mode

Starman ending clears the music for some reason

And when it ends you just never hear music again

honestly the creepyest effect it produces is still there: gameplay. imo gameplay can become very scary when you get almost caught (in videogames in general)
think about the Warden in Minecraft for example. it doesn't look nor sound very scary in itself (for example if you go in creative mode), but what is scary about it is that it can suddenly come at you and kill you
kinda the same here imo
i also like the music itself
if you want to make it more creepy-like (altho I still think it’s fine)
maybe reduce a bit how ‘upbeat’ the song sounds
use instruments from the spooky and castle themes?
potentially make the music’s volume lower at the start and higher the closer the chaser is to you
