Late reply cuz apparently all the Discord servers are active today and I'm not omnipresent lol, don't feel bad for not being able to work on the hack, you obviously won't have time or motivation every time, also, I get how you feel about going on a trip, I once went to my aunt's house for a week and I couldn't work on my hack because she has no Wi-Fi and I didn't bring my puter with me, and I was desperate, but sometimes you need a rest to not overwhelm yourself too much, and that way you can get some clever ideas for the hack

Okay so here's what i plan to do in the next days (if i can, the 3 weeks-long unavailability doesn't count):
- Fixing the new underground tileset โ
- Retiling and improving 1-2 and the bonus room of 1-1 1/2
- Finishing 6-2
- Making the "Waterfall cliffs" tileset
- Making new hud graphics
- Probably modify some sound effects
- Making my own "
mario dieslose a life" and "level clear" themes
might also start a new level later, probably world 3 or 5

Okay so, yesterday i revamped (mostly remade) the bonus area of 1-1, and started revamping 1-2. Today i made a bit more progress on 1-2

I'm sick, and i'm going in vacation on thursday. So i wont be able to make progress on the hack

I think 1-A with jumping cheep-cheeps + silhouette effect could be a good idea
gonna write some levels i wanna work on (when i'll be able to) + their gimmicks
(and some that i already started working on)
6-2 : Parakoopas + Yellow lifts
1-A : Jumping cheep cheeps + silhouette effect
3-3 : Scale lifts + waterfalls
2-Castle : Stone-ified enemies brought back to life with switches (like in newer wii)
4-Tower : Steam garden tower, moving stone blocks with spikes
7-3 : Rotating mushroom platforms (like nsmbwii)
Made some icons! I know it will get compressed horribly with that many colors so i made a fully purple one too instead of rainbow
i think i'll also make a version with gradient dithering and a version with a full color for the background

yea actually i did that because i saw you draw on ibis paint too so i decided that i would use it for once for nsmb
i tried making 2 kinds of pseudo-dithering for the rainbow, to make the colors transition better

The POW Flower:
Every time X or Y is pressed (just like when you want to shoot a fireball), all enemies on screen get killed, with a flash on the screen. Bosses don't get defeated instantly, they just get hit once.
But you can only use it 3 times before powering down to Super Mario

Try doing this:
- On NitroPaint go to New --> New Texture --> Select your icon and convert it to palette16 and save it
- Click on New --> New Texture Archive --> Add and select the icon you converted, then save it as an NSBTX
- Replace a random NSBTX with the one you made (make sure to export the original one first)
- Take a look at each color in the NSBTX and try to replicate each color in "banner.bin"
- Export the PNG in the NSBTX and on "banner.bin" import that PNG with the "import this bitmap with existing palette" setting and save, don't forget to reimport the original NSBTX after you're done

and they're part of the plot of the hack, and if i manage to have cutscenes (with slides) then we'll be able to see the plot in-game

and world 7 is very inspired by Dreams, and another level called "The Far Sky" (i actually got inspiration from it for Dreams)

Oh also, I said earlier that we did some sfx modifications. One of the sounds that we changed was when you open the DS. Now, it's Mario and Luigi saying "Super Mario Brothers!".
Some other changes are Bowser's voice (being replaced by nsmb2 voiceclips), 2 Mario voicelines being replaced with some from sm64, and the "bye-bye" when you close the DS. Though one of the 2 bowser voices and the "bye-bye" are broken in-game for some reason. The first one is silent while the other one is corrupted.
i should really work on levels faster... at this rate i'll finish in 2-3 years

i think its the execution that had to be improved, like, using a dark bg, and giving a reason why there's rain in the level (like a gimmick) tho the gimmick is not really required

Also, it's just a personal prefference, but I'd replace the quicksand animations instead, if you don't wanna sacrifice it you could replace only one of the two quicksand tiles
the thing is that im trying to have at least like 12 different kinds of tiles
and the quicksand is:
1: used by the desert tileset
2: has a higher z-layer than mario
pretty much, tho the tutorial shows what happens, and how to prevent your tileset from breaking, rather than how to edit the palette

actually its because the last time i tested, i used the part of the palette that changes, but where the color it changes to are the exact same
so yea it works, but it seems to only affect the 8 leftmost colors of each row of the palette
seems to work now
tho the animation of the waterfalls is a bit weird (it goes back and forth and sometimes stays static), so i think i'll probably stick to the code hack that someone might make
another thing: it seems like the first palette row in the tileset uses the 4 first rows of the animation palette. but the second palette row seems to use rows 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16 at random

Worldmap icons are limited to 16 colors and they share palettes, MeroMero made a code hack that allows you to have unique 256 color palettes for each icon and also includes beta icons for whatever reason

I actually used a trick for it: because of the limited background slots, I didnt know where to put it. So I decided to replace the "bg clouds (tall)" version with it, because it shares the same graphics, but not the same tilemap. So what I did was replacing the second, unused palette, with the variation. Then I imported the default "background clouds" over it, and changed the palette with the "change palette" feature. And bam, new variation with the same graphics but different palette.
Oh yeah, I did this with the beach background from my hack, there's the default one and the sunset one I used in 3-C
Kinda wish we could add more background to the game tho

Okay I think I found powerup ideas:
- Sword of Power: This powerful swords can kill enemies in front of Mario, and can do a horizontal dash attack (and float during the time of it). It can also defeat any enemy with a ground pound.
- Snow Flower: turns enemies into snowballs that you can roll, or grab (unless it's too large). If the terrain is snowy, the snowball will grow.
Note: they're not necessarily for my hack, those are just some random powerup ideas that I got

also if anyone wants to modify the "continue/quit" screen, keep in mind that the colors are "hardcoded". the first color (after the transparency, so color 2) is for the black background, color 15 is for the shadow of the text, and color 16 is for the text itself. you probably want to modify those colors manually, and set them to what they were originally (black, gray, and white respectfully)

actually they're not hardcoded, they use the graphics from the original japanese version (where "Game Over" is written in caps). the original file is still in the game, but for some reason the developers decided to use this one for the "continue/quit" screen and the new one for the letters falling

There's something that I planned a while back: Challenge Houses. They're Toad houses on the world map, but are a few enemies to defeat when you enter the level, in a limited time, to get a reward. Kinda like map enemies on NSMBWii
The thing is that I might change that a bit: make them more like the SM3DW challenge houses, and getting a reward at the end. The reward will be some power ups (better power ups depending on how tough the enemies are). And the challenge houses wont "disappear" when you finish them like regular Toad houses do. You can replay them again and again whenever you want to get the power ups.
2 custom backgrounds. the second one isnt animated yet (i know how i can animate it but i dont know from which bg slot i'll replace the animation)
i should probably try reimporting the beach one with nitro paint tho, it suffered from nsmbe compression
