I just grabed my underground tile set as a place holder for colour testing

simple anwser is, this isnt newer, not everything is loaded at once. Most code is crammed into unused overlays so its only loaded when its needed
tried many things but the normal jungle ground just always seamed to work better

i feel like it would be nice to add an extra tile of ledge here under the log platform. i thought maybe adding an indicator like coins could be nice but it would be too obvious. putting a bit more of ledge tho could let the player know that it's at least somewhat safe to fall down and that they're able to go back up (tho you can already go back up anyway)
also i feel like some sections like the casette room, the underground area, and kinda the end of the level, feel a bit empty (compared to the rest of the level. or it's me wanting to overdecorate everything again 😭)
for example adding a ceiling in the underground area would be nicer i think
also i really like the use of the logs (both rotating log actor and tileset logs) in the level
and for the moneybag i kinda wish it could have a slightly longer path instead of falling down into the poison. it's a gimmick that gets rarely used in general so i kinda wish it was used a little bit more here (tho i like the way it was used)

the memory for updating the animation isnt allocated though so there is some problems
so the animation allocation is being tied to the players grounded movment

Okay random idea, Im working on my Lemmy fight and currently I dont have the shell stuff set up but Lemmy is in his shell phase in this screenshot, but im thinking. What if Lemmy sits in his shell on the ball to give him a larger attack area. So if the ball hits you you will get shoved off the platformand him being on the ball makes it harder to jump over

im limmited because custom particals are not possible
nsmbds uses an updated version of the .spa format which is very diffrent from the version mkds and 64ds use. So there is no tools that can extract and modify the graphics and all the animation data
and the only reason they are editable in those games are because of leaks which allowed people to make tools iirc, the version nsmbds uses doesnt have a leak though
So it'd be really hard and painful to make a tool

Illy, what will happen if you clear a B-Side? If you clear an A-Side, you unlock the next course. But what are the perks of clearing a B-Side? I'm suggesting some SMB3-like bonus game that gives you a chance to get a Red Flying Star in one of your item slots.
i'm guessing they also unlock the next course, but apart from that are more of optional courses. unless Illy planned something else

these, ds games use them to only load code thats needed as all of the games code usauly cant fit into memory, so in games such as nsmbds overlays are loaded when needed. The limit for the amount of bytes in overlay 84, the overlay that Lemmy is in is 16768 bytes and as you can see im comming close to that
It might look neat if you played with the scaling so it seems like the clown car flies in from the background
Then you could also just have the clown car just hovering in the distance during the fight so it's not as random

Problem is that the 3d models can’t be rendered behind tile sets due to de hardware limitations

It's a good design concept but the colors on the bottom of the crystles aren't blending well
Some messing around with minor transparency might help fix it up or at least give a good insight on what color to aim for

i just did some waves on a 16x8 pattern, then duplicated it (had to do this at first because i wanted to use the underground ice tileset animation
and then when i wanted to use your code for the triple blocks, i upscaled a 16x16 tile of this pattern, to 32x64 (making the "tile" larger so it doesn't require a lot of sprites). also with billinear to give it some sort of blur. i added some blue colors on the sides (not sure if they were lighter or darker), it was a 2 pixels-wide gradient. then i duplicated twice the layer with the pattern, and gave the duplicates different opacity and blending
