GW stands for GameWisp, a Discord partner, @ancient otter. Servers partnered with GameWisp present some emojis, called "global emojis" (or wrongly called "emotes"), which can be used anywhere on Discord as long as you have the permission to send external emojis; that includes DMs.
Not to brag but I am in quite a few of those, and I only have here and MEE6 in common with you, so I could have figured you didn't know about it.
If you are on mobile, the emojis from other servers are grayed out, and if you are on PC they won't show up in search. Those emojis (said "custom emojis") require Nitro to be used elsewhere, yes.
Do you want me to send you some GW servers in DMs?
You only need to be in it and restart your Discord client after joining (force close and reopen or just Ctrl+R if you are on PC), although some need a few more requirements; check the server's info channels to check about those.
