They've already said it's not something that'll happen. The game isn't built for it and would have to be completely rebuilt from scratch.

"Hundreds of other games." How many of these so-called hundreds were released in 2017? How many of them started development for PC only until releasing for console later in the year? How many of them were sold as a single-player experience that, while it had a multiplayer mode at launch, wasn't the main draw of the game. Even nowadays, with the exception of free-to-play titles, there are tons of games that still don't support cross-play, especially those that focus more on single player with multiplayer modes, not the other way around.
