Pointers will do this even if you shoot the animal it is pointing at in the heart/insta-drop it. This prevents the dog from getting the full EXP for levelling the skill - I've only ever seen my dog do a complete successful point from tracking to the animal dying with Class 1 animals.
Pointers should have a successful point if:
- the animal drops instantly
- the animal is shot in a vital organ
- the animal dies within a certain time (perhaps have higher level pointing skill make this period of time longer - even with a single lung shot, Class 9 animals like bison shot with a gun that has a wide range of recommended classes that goes up to 9 have a bleed rate of low).
Pointers should have an unsuccessful point if:
- the animal is spooked
- the animal is not shot in an organ
- the animal does not die within a certain time
